Alternatively, Mega Tonberries are easy to animation-lock so you can use two/three Thief dresses with high AGI/LCK to chain it to death without it doing anything. (This also works on Chac, an infamously annoying superboss in Via Infinito).
There are definitely ways to deal with the thing, trust me. But it's almost always a pain in the ass, like usual when fighting any sort of Tonberry (franchise veterans dread fighting the things for a damn good reason).
If you use monsters from the Creature Creator, it's possible to build a team of monsters that can turn the Mega Tonberry into a joke, but managing to build such a team of monsters will still take quite a while. Better to simply hope that you run into Shady Duo rather than Tonberry the Ripper.
The Fiends in question being: Divebeak, Recoil, & Flak Python. All three of them can be found very early in the game (as early as Chapter 1, in fact!). What you want to do is: Equip them all with the Thief dressphere for the sheer speed (the reason why will become apparent soon), and no matter what happens DO NOT REMOVE THE FULL-AUTO SKILL FROM RECOIL & FLAK PYTHON! The two machina snakes are vital to the team almost entirely thanks to Full-Auto. Next, find a way to teach all three of them the White Wind, 0 MP Cost (or is it 1 MP Cost? Can't remember atm), Ribbon, Auto-Haste, & Auto-Wall abilities. Then use items/accessories to try and max out their Strength stat & their total HP. From there, just grind up their levels. Don't be afraid to stick an Adamantite onto one of the snakes either, it may slow it down, but the massive boost to it's two defense stats is well worth it. Once you're done with all of that, the trio should be able to handle any Tournament fight that they are faced with. Even against the Ex-Crimson Squad team (one of the harder teams to fight in the entire game thanks almost entirely to the presence of Nooj) in the Youth League Tournament, as long as you manage the team's aggression as necessary (going down to 1 star after Nooj uses Lightfall (always deals exactly 5000 damage to your entire team) is a good idea so that your team will start using White Wind until the damage taken from Lightfall has been dealt with.
I've had a lot of success with that particular trio of Fiends, and in that particular save I'm still in Chapter 1 (without New Game Plus!). It took quite a bit of grinding CC and Tournaments, but it's worth it, as that team can stun-lock pretty much anything to death due to how fast they are. Mega Tonberry in particular is so slow that the team should be able to handle it simply through almost endlessly stun-locking it, as long as you are wary of Chef's Knife and try to stay defensive during the fight.
