Yeah it makes very little sense, I guess it's just something to not think about too much.
For Sin - well, judging from the world-map Macalania is right at the ocean (large Fjord) - maybe the Temple and that part are connected to it?
For them falling so far... i mean the game is veeery inconsistant about how much a human or the main-group can endure. On one hand even early on your characters get impaled by swords and have no problems with enemies that throw them 10m in the air, or shoot canons at them, on the other hand at some point they are stopped by a few guns...
As far as I recall, they are all in a Sin toxin fever dream.
I will have to redo that particular part, because I seem to remember the scene just ending abruptly, like memories had been cut off. Maybe its just me, but I always interpreted it as sins toxins.
