If you want to change the button prompts you need an external mod. For FFX/X-2 there's the UnX mod that can allow you to customize button prompts.
But this does require that the Controller Configuration submenu option be present for this game. Without that option, you're stuck with something like DS4Windows or InputMapper and possibly turning off Steam Controller support for this specific game in order to get the external software to work properly (required because otherwise both the Steam app and the third party utility are fighting for control over the HID hardware IDs from the controller's PCB).
Which means that without some juggling, you will be forced to ♥♥♥♥ around with settings. Exactly like they are saying.
Unless you can plug in a PS3/4 controller (the exact same way as an xbox) then dont try to tell people its supported, because its not. You are still forced to jump through hoops to use your controller.
Personally, I dont blame microsoft for not supporting it, as others have pointed out, its a competitor, why in the hell would they do that? You honestly think if they supported it, others would go "Oh, hey, they are a cool company, lets not use my PS3 controller, and go buy an Xbox to support them!"
Not freaking likely!!
Dont bother trying to come up with a defense, it will only make you look more desperate to defend something not needing defending. If you can spend 600+ on a system, you can afford 45+ on a controller.
Anyone using a DS3/4 controller is using it because of the layout, plain and simple. MS could easily support it by not forcing XInput as the only modern connectivity method. Had MS used proper HID standards the DS4 would be natively recognized. Hell, it's natively recognized in Mac OS X because Apple didn't do what MS did with regard to forcing use of a proprietary input method.
It sucks for the consumers, but who ever thought of THEM.
I've been playing FFX2 since I was 10 1/2 yo. It was my first FF game. The xbox icons really throw me off, especially w the Thunder Tower Synch mini games. Every time I see (XBox) X I got for A (which is X in the PS Controller). LB and RB also mess me up lol. Super annoying !
Open Steam and go to your Library.
Right-click on the game and select "Properties."
In the "Controller" tab, make sure "Enable Steam Input" is set to "Forced On." This can help ensure that the game recognizes your PS4 controller.
Big Picture Mode:
Launch Steam in Big Picture Mode. You can do this by clicking on the controller icon in the upper right corner of the Steam client.
Go to "Settings" > "Controller Settings" and make sure "PlayStation Configuration Support" is checked.
After that, launch the game from Big Picture Mode to see if it recognizes your PS4 controller and shows the correct button prompts.
Check the Controller:
Make sure your PS4 controller is properly connected. If it’s wired, ensure the connection is secure. If it’s wireless, make sure it’s paired correctly with your PC.
Game-Specific Settings:
Some games have their own input settings. Check the game’s settings menu to see if there’s an option to switch between controller types or button prompts.
Third-Party Software:
If the game still doesn’t show PS4 buttons, you might consider using third-party software like DS4Windows or InputMapper. These programs can help emulate an Xbox controller, allowing games to recognize your PS4 controller as an Xbox controller.
