If you're still in the story, grind at whatever place you are at right now. X is fairly linear, so if you've gotten to a place, that place is usually also the best place for AP available to you right now. There are no secret "sweet spots", really.

The only time AP grinding comes with a strategy, really, is at endgame.

Well, you're nowhere near being able to grind AP very efficiently, so like others have said the best thing to do if you're feeling weak is to grind wherever you're at in the story. However, when you get to end game there is a way to get 99 sphere levels in a single battle. if you're interested in knowing about this for later, check out this link.

depends on what youre grinding. if youre low in spheres, just grind any place you can 1 shot enemies. if you feel you are just under leveled and need more ap, grind the strongest area you can 1 shot or 2 shot enemies.

protip for endgame: when you fight dark yojimbo, you have to fight him 4 times. each time you can steal...dark matter? and has like a 1/8 chance of dropping master spheres. save after the 3rd fight, quit the game, and reload. you have to fight all 4 without quitting the game, or it resets the number of fights. i.e. you can grind him for master spheres and dark matter to your hearts content.
it is by far the fastest and best way to obtain the break damage limit and ribbon abilities.

i also suggest grabbing the cheat engine script on fearless (just google it), and enableing the "aeons only" overdrive mode. this will cause your characters to gain overdrive like an aeon, from dealing or being dealt damage.

and honestly, if youre going to follow any of the glitch exploitation methods that guy linked to, you might as well just cheat properly and add every item to your inventory, tick the checkbox next to the master spheres so the number never changes, and just tape a turbo button down on your controller as you activate every sphere slot for free. the cheating that he links to is just a waste of your time. either grind as the game intends, or cheat properly. exploiting glitches is still cheating.

That's funny, I always argue the exact other way round :P

But to each their own. As long as it's single player, I could not care less what other people do in their games. Everyone's free to play they way THEY want, as long as that doesn't impact anyone else.

Best possible advice to give.

the best Spots are ( imo) :
Kilika - the enemies in Kilika give quite alot XP compared to enemies on the Mi'hen highroad
Macalania woods - quite easy enrmies that give good XP especially if you rushed through thunder plains
Bevelle Bridge - 2nd best Spot in the Game , finish atleast 1 main Path for every Character
don tomberry in the monster arena - best spot , you need special weapons for it which convert our overdrive meter into XP once you are able to kill him fast , switch to throwing potions at him

Update: Mix up where you do the grinding, purely to give yourself a change of scenery every so often. Also, try to set a goal for how far you wanna grind. (My current game, I want to learn Lulu's -aga spells before I go to Macalania.)

Sadly you are most limited in your power by access to sphere keys. I really wish there were lvl.3s available earlier, to truly show off the power of Double Cast :( As it is, you get that skill when you're almost done with the story anyway and everyone is strong enough to one/two-shot most enemies anyway. Not that it isn't useful for Monster Arena capturing, of course.
