I read a few strategies online on what to offer him but none work and he refuses my second offer. Is this version different? What do I offer him?

There should be no difference from the original version. Maybe you're looking at a bad guide? According to the wiki the way to pay the least money was to counter his offer with (his offer * 0.5)+1 gil twice, and then on the third offer counter with (his offer * 0.700005). Try that, I guess?

I checked two, both said to select the third option "defeat the most powerful enemies" then counter offer
first - 125,001 he accepts this
second - 125,002 no deal
third - 150,003

the second guide said to counter with

first - 125,001 He accepts
second - 112,501 no deal
third - 141,751

unfortunately 112,001 is .5 +1 of his second offer and he won't take it for whatever reason. Thanks though.

Ok, I got it. I messed up the first time and it looks like closing the game wasn't enough to get him to reset I needed to close the launcher too. He still wouldn't accept half plus one for the second offer for some reason I needed to offer

first - 125,001 he
second - 125,002
third - 150,003

I was able to pay 194,000

A note, if you don't care about speed running, and yes i understand that's common knowledge at this point. But you can get his price down to his lowest point then pay twice that to get some easy teleport spheres.
For the double price i usually end up paying just alittle under 300,000 (depends on what kind of deal yojimbo gives).

If you grind a lot, the Teleport Spheres can be decently useful. Plus you're likely to have the money for them, too. Teleport Spheres are easy to get at endgame, but in the midgame/early late game they can save you a lot of AP if used smartly.

It's by no means required, of course.

Another note on late game stuff (after the Yunaleska) you can go back to each of the chambers of faith and get some bonus spheres. Just know that both Valefor, and Sheva are locked behind their dark aeon boss fights.

NP, i wish i knew about that stuff the first time i played through the game. When ginding for max stats it's pretty useless, but when trying to level for the fight against sin it's a great help.
Edit: the Anima doesn't have bonus items to get for whatever reason.

Thanks, A lot of this stuff is pretty confusing to me on my first playthrough. I wanted to do it without any guides or anything but there is just so much here at the end to find/figure out/do it got overwhelming lol.

Understandable. I am typically the same way when it comes to using guides the first time i play through a game.

You can do most things without a guide and without trouble. You just need to look around a bit. Most things are "hidden" in plane sight.
Just explore every nook and cranny. The dark aeons are a bit of a punishment if you did not get something in the areas they block, but that's about it.
the game even tells you about things like the extra chests in temples, rewards for minigames, or the monsterFarm.
