Is there no way to set marks in the first blitzball game?

you can't set them to watch anyone for techs in the very game if that's what you're talking about... that game is purely to get used to blitzball for when you start playing for real

And how do you make the team not sit in place and ignore the other team?

I use custom controls.... other wise I'd run down the full system, however there's a tutorial that they run you through before Tidus goes running after Yuna, basically you have to open the movement type menu (Auto, Movement A, Movement B, or forfeit if losing) and after selecting one, you get another menu which gives the option of "Normal, Mark Mode, Right Side, or Left Side" Normal should make them shift playfield side based on ball holder'sposition(left or right) minus defenders, Mark makes them follow the person they're supposed to watch for techs(useless in this match) Right side sends them to player team'sside of field, left SHOULD do the opposite, but it's non-functional it seems... which is sad since it was handy when playing back on ps2 and wanting to send your guys forward for a long toss ahead while enemy team charges you... Personally I recommend usinga movement mode, never go on auto...(You don't get movement options if enemy has ball, which is handy for setting team position while enemy has ball)

Defense:
Right Side - you defend your right side of the court
Left Side - you defend left side of the court
Normal - you defend the middle of the court or your defenders chase the nearest on ball player.
Mark Mode - you defend those who you marked.
Just keep switching between normal and x-side if your team doesn't move.
