since i was a bit unsure myself now i looked it up
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/197344-final-fantasy-x/64580081
there it also says you need to defeat all aeons
yes thats what i think too , i think someone once said something about not having gotten the besaid or macalania treasure and then saying he cant get the sisters , due to not being able to get anima
If you want to cheese it you could just use Yojimbo and try for Zanmato. I believe that the game auto-saves when you run into Besaid and encounter Dark Valefor. If that's the case then have Yuna in your party, run into Besaid to encounter Dark Valefor, and immediately summon Yojimbo and spend as much Gil as you want trying to get him to use Zanmato. When you have no more Gil (or you've spent as much as you're willing to spend) reset the game and load that auto-save and try again. Again, it's pretty cheesy, but Dark Valefor is one of the easiest Dark Aeons to defeat (if not the easiest Dark Aeon to defeat) . If you cheese him, but then you "legitimately" defeat the other Dark Aeons then you will know that you progressed to a point where you would have defeated Dark Valefor without using Zanmato.
No problem! I hate recommending Zanmato, but if you beat any other dark aeon without it then you know you were strong enough to beat Dark Valefor without it.
sadly theres not many options , if you missed the besaid or macalania treasure , thats why i always make sure to get them and double check just to be save
if you have some ultimate weapons you could grind some strength spheres to boost your strength
Also, Break HP Limit is highly inefficient and not worth getting. You can beat all superbosses in the game without ever having it on anyone. The vast majority of attacks either kill you anyway even with BHPL, or can be reduced to <9,999 damage.
