Final Fantasy games traditionally anren't linked by story or even take place in the same universe.

Exceptions are FFX and X-2, The XIII trilogy; a sequel to FFXII on Nintendo DS (original being on PS2 and not PC yet anyway), FFIV having a small sequel and FFVII having a whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of mostly mediocre sequels and prequels...

I may have forgotten one or 2 but most for the most part the order is obvious. Personally I recommend starting with VI, VII or IV. But you can start anywhere really.

For me the best is FF10 i was too young to understand VII and VIII when they came out. I just started FF10 hd again and im still in love with it. You can start hating FF7 and FF8 becouse of old graphic so i recommend you to start with 10 and then play some older ones :FFXIIImog:

Yeah FFX is the best. I loved it since i was a kid even though i didn't understand the story when i was younger. I still like to play through it even though i've finished it multiple times. I wouldn't play FFXIII first. It is fun, but the story isn't that great.

Don't forget about Final Fantasy Tactics.

FFX is a good one to start off with. It was the first "Modern" FF game with voice acting and such and with it being on PC it is easy to access and play.

That being said, my personal favorite is FF9. FF9 was created a throwback to the original FF games before 7. It has alot of old school charm to it but still has modern day amenities that keep it fresher than some of the older FF games.

So you cannot go wrong with either 10 or 9.

That all being said, I strongly encourage you to go back and replay the older FF's over time. I played FF1, 2, and 3 all my Iphone recently and frankly, they played well on that platform. I enjoyed my time with them. FF6 and 7 are widely debated as being the "best" in the series, but it really comes down to personal preference. This day and age FF7 hasn't aged all that well and while its still a phenomenal RPG, I can see why newer audiences may not see the appeal in that PS1 Era graphical fidelity.

So anyway, My suggestion is start with FF9 or 10 and then go back and play 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7. 8 is "ok" but honestly, its my least favorite of the series (and I think many would agree).

FF13 is pretty meh as well, but you can play it for the sake of saying you've played it.

And then there's FF12. Probably the most underrated FF game because of its battle system that many purists abhor, but honestly, the gambit system is a ton of fun and the storyline for FF12 is really solid. FF12 Remake is coming to PC in 2017 so wait for that and then get it, its worth playing!

Last but not least, if you enjoy tactical games (Ala Fire Emblem) then FF Tactics is really good, but if you don't like that kinda gameplay then you won't like it as much as the traditional RPGs

FF games aren't related to each other (unless stated).

FF10 is a good start. It has simple, yet fun mechanics and amazing story.
FF4 and 6 are an absolute wonder too and a must. Some people hate FF12 , but I loved it, you just need to get a hang of its combat system. FF Tactics is a favorite too, but I played it more because of combat system and mechanics than because of the plot.

A friend advice: never touch FF 13.
