It's by Powerman 5000, a band I used to be into in my 20's. I guess they're kind of glam/power metal?

It's not by Powerman 5000 at all.

It's by an old english straight-edge vocalist called Bill Muir, from a band called xtillidiex. You can see it right here.[finalfantasy.wikia.com]

I have no idea what gave The Drip this impression but it's not the silliest thing I've heard. I remember people saying it was recorded by Rammstein.

The style is hardcore punk, with a slight hint of power metal.

It's read "Till I Die", the Xs are a common part of straight edge culture. The band was not very popular anywhere until they toured in Japan and gained quite a bit of popularity but ultimately disbanded, which is when Uematsu found Bill's music and Square contracted his work.

It's worth noting two things:

1) Uematsu composed the song, the lyrics were written by Sugimoto (in cooperation with a relatively popular Japanese-English translator, Alexander Smith) and the instrumental is also done by Square. Bill only provided the vocals.

2) Bill, however, didn't stop himself from putting his own little spin. If you listen closely to the full version of the song, at the end, you can hear him barking out the following words:

"Straight edge"; the culture.

"Till I Die"; his band.

"Lost cause!"; the name of the last album his band recorded before disbanding. Curiously, this was the album that Uematsu had heard before reaching out to him for work.

That specific song is power metal. That said its actually written and composed by Nobuo Uematsu and the Black Mages which are more hard rock. And its sung by a punk band singer.

Truly a multigenre song.

Also since its now nearly 17 yearts old there are LOTS of different versions which are kinda cool.

Like a more traditional hard rock version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmQqf24Ot0s

I'm pretty late to the party but to me it sounds kind of nu-metalish but also reminds me of Pantera a little.
The guitar is glam/heavy metal, the vocals are pop. A common trope for songs from that era. The growling version has the mad drums.
Said version:
