Cringeworthy Tidus hissy fit
Was enjoying this game. Even sat through the awkward fake laughing scene. Hey I guess I can Identify with that a little even though it was tough to watch. But then last night I got to "Home" and see the Rikku/ Tidus hissy fit about how she is going to die. I had to watch that stupid crap for like 8 minutes even a re-hash of the awkward laughing scene. What is with these japanese and their over-senimentality? I mean who cares about some dumb chick in a video game who is not even real? You can't use a pheonix down on the b****? It feels forced like they just made up the story as they went along. And it's just filler now. But before I was getting the sense that the game story was really about humans on the path to thier own nuclear annihilation. Seems like a good subject for a story. But I guess now the story's about a few "special" people dying and how that is so heart wrenchingly terrible, not long after I just saw hundreds of thousands of people wiped out by this big whale thingy.

What the hell is that thing anyway? I am reminded every time of cartman's line in "whale ♥♥♥♥♥♥" south park episode. "Dude, the japanese really do not like whales." But I digest...

And then of course the leader Cid "just happens" to be Rikku's dad. It's funny how that always just happens in JRPG's, I just happen to be the kings daughter, son, chosen few, etc. And then what's up with Cid? He is like a total stupid a******.

Can someone edit these scenes out of the game please. Cause they are kind of ruining it for me. Instead have Rikku say, "Tidus, you're annoying, lame, and your shorts look stupid." And have him freak out about that instead

Well, it appears you don't appreciate certain aspects of the story, and that's fine. Not everyone has to love everything about every story. In fact, it's GOOD that some aspects are divisive, because that causes dialogue and dialogue promotes growth.

You rightly recognized that this is a Japanese game, and as such there are elements to the storytelling that are colored by Japanese socio-cultural aspects. That's not surprising. The same is true for every story, from any cultural sphere. Western or American storytelling similarly has recognizable aspects to it, which seem strange or stereotypical to audiences outside of that cultural sphere (things like "never say die", for example, or the inherent distrust of authority coloring so many vigilante-type superhero stories, etc.). I see no reason to bash a nation based on that, in fact you should celebrate it because it exposes you to a diverse range of socio-cultural influences you may be unfamiliar with. If you don't appreciate it that's fine, but I'm not sure "what's with the Japanese and their whales AMIRITE?" is exactly the right way to respond to it. You do you, I guess.

Asking for them to edit out their cultural identity to serve your own particular tastes, well, that's just unreasonable. And insulting. Perhaps that argument could also be reversed, and you could be asked to edit YOUR views on these things instead? But I "digest" [sic].

The story is poorly written trash but it adds to the charm.

The first part of that scene- that Tidus blew up for giving Yuna so much energy and "false hope" because her so-called guardians didn't want to give him the details- was right on the money. Though Home probably wasn't the place to do it- the whole handling of Home was odd.

Square just couldn't leave it there and had to continue to insist Tidus and Yuna are infatuated/puppy-love with each other when the game hasn't really illustrated that- thus "look at the four times we talked! Weren't they the best?" montage. As you already pointed out, they wanted you to feel what their story never merited.

Or we could just bust out the streotypes about intense displays of emotion being substitutes for writing in less-literary settings because Japanese people are traditionally mild.

At the point you are at & you do not know what the "Whale Thingy" is?
You are clearly not paying attention. Maybe RPG/ story orientated games are not your thing.

I assume you do not read much.Try it, before setting out on your next RPG Adventure.

Coming to care for a character is a hallmark of good story telling & you will find a large majority of RPG fans play because they wish to feel something. The story clearly has had some impact on you (all be it, perhaps on the fringe & maybe not quite as intended)otherwise your post here would not exist.

That said i am not saying FFX is great story telling. I actually agree with Great Duck re: the relationship between Tidus & Yuna. (I feel like some scenes are missing)

Good job for sticking it out as you have, no shame in quitting & moving on if you are not getting anything out of continuing. Move on to something that suitably engages you.

Am I the only one finding it deliciously ironic that the person complaining about a Tidus hissy-fit is doing so in a way befitting of an actual Tidus hissy-fit?

Somehow I am reminded of Tidus' hilarious "Maca--watch'a-ma call it?" antics.

I feel like that scene should've gone in after the kiss scene, and even then, it's still painful to watch. It took all the light-heartnedness out of the game, and now Rikku and Tidus are on the verge of me hating them. I have continued on with the game and found no real other scenes like that it's a great game except for that scene.
I would have preferred the al bhed to be scumbag kidnappers to hold ransom then to have them put the summoners in quarantine for their own safety, I mean come on that is lame.
But i digest is a joke from a famous movie and many sitcoms have used it FYI

but i am only at the calm lands and have a feeling there may be more "gems" of these type of cutscenes, I got kind of a bad feeling about the ending, let me guess she dies, and here come the Tidus waterworks. Actually since there is an x-2, maybe she doesn't die or is that a prequel

The laugh scene and Tidus flipping out at Home are pretty much the only cringeworthy scenes, if you find them cringeworthy at all.

It's generally a good idea to see a story to the end, and THEN comment on it. Partial information is prone to misconception.

I see his reaction not only from learning the truth regarding Yuna but that those around him who he thought he had earned some respect from (especially Auron) still view him as a child.
Generally people do not speak of death with or around children.
Maybe they were right to do so..

Unfortunatley, (although it is difficult to think back to my first playthrough) i believe there are enough hints (maybe not directly) to give the player the idea that this may be the case which undermines this "Big Reveal" at Home.

Also, "but i digest.."?
You may be meaning to use digress = meaning to move away from the main topic or follow a distraction. Atleast i believe this would ba more accurate use here. I may be mistaken as i am not aware of the intended joke. No hate intended, only meaning to inform.

Whenever anyone's post-Sin plans are brought up or Tidus talks about Guardians doing their jobs, everyone veers off. Well, why? That Braska didn't survive and Jecht's becoming Sin's being dropped so early tells you something is screwy very early on.

To be fair, the title screen saying "Final Fantasy" tells you there is something screwy very early on.

LOL

"But I digest" is a joke, from some show or movie, cmon ppl, how you can be such noobs at life, is truly mind-bottling

Actually it's the sad piano music and scene at the intro, as well as the hissy fit music/scene, that make me suspicious
masternoxx1 Aug 23, 2017 @ 8:10am
I plan on having a large post-Sin party and hooking up with Rikku so if Yuna is dead it would be a lot less awkward

I cringe/chuckle when Tidus is talking to Cid, and Cid say he will make him regret it if Yuna gets hurt. It's dialog right after you are on it the first time and Cid thows Tidus on the ground. Tidus says, "I wont.." in a quick funny kind of monotone way and does his balled fist bent elbow downward thrust thing when he wants to underscore his statement.

And the part where, I don't remember when the part was, but Tidus got surpirsed and goes "Uaye?" Best I can try to sound it out. It's like "ayee" but with a U sound at the beginning and he sounds really goofy and dorky. And it's totally out of place and louder than the other character's surprise recations.

Then what really cuts me up is at the beginning when you're swimming with Riku and have to fight the boss. Where the albed are salvaging that machina. At the beginning, he swims up to a control panel to proceed to make it power things on. He just starts beating it over and over again and stuff starts lighting up. He just beats it with his fist like 15 times in the same animation. Everything gets powered up and the camera starts moving into the new area, and he's still beating the damn thing. Cracks me up.

PS: Ahh that part was because he was embarrised and made the macarana snafu at the same time!
