That and x-2 is just a mini game compilation with cutscenes in between. There's not that much content outside of them. watching videos for 90% of chapter 4? Right....
It has elements of continuity from the 1st. It has its own story for the most part.
The world isn't as gloomy or serious business as it was in 10, but some people preferred that seriousness, or thought that 10-2 might have handled the mood shift poorly, or something.
Dresspheres/class changing even mid-battle gets some dislike, some people think the animations for it are poor/silly/whatever... It can be compared to stuff like Magical Girl show transformations, like Sailor Moon.
Personally? I rate 10-2 among one of the best FF games I have played, I like some of changes compared to 10, like Yuna being more silly/cheery, the world not locked in terror of Sin, a class change system, and active time battles.
If you can give the game enough chance to get past the "bad" parts and get to the "good" you might like the game. What counts as "bad" for you might be different from "bad" for me though.
The gameplay I'd argue is quite good but the story is a stark contrast from FFX.....FFX-2 is like a long run-out joke with heavy "overly Japanese" elements to it.....that being said...its still better than FFXIII
Though the combat and Sphere Arena thing is absolutely amazeballs. I am still in chapter 2 and the girls are already like lvl 55 because of the arena. It's nuts. Crazy. FUN! The combat and leveling system is the only consolation of a fairly weak story. It's interesting, don't get me wrong, but it's super cliche and cheesy.
This is the primary reason I gave up on the game. I wasn't enjoying it and never found much of a reason to soldier on.
As for the combat system, my first impression was that it was really quite good. But after a while it started to feel a bit sloppily executed, especially when trying to cast spells.
And as to the "girly" feel... the only people I've ever really seen call it girly are people who are trying to defend it by putting words in the critic's mouth. And as much as I would like to like Paine, she is just a horrible addition.
