Defenders generally get issued SMGs and shotguns while attackers get DMRs and assault rifle, I believe the idea is that defenders are meant to have the advantage during CQB while attackers have the advantage during ranged engagements (hence why all but a couple 1 speed defenders get an ACOG).

Obviously there are a couple examples that break this rule (Jaeger's 416-C assault rifle, Sledge's m560A1 shotgun etc.) especially with a lot of the newer operators, but that is (or, at least was) the original idea.

Edit: to answer your question - Jaeger is pretty much the only defender with a rifle, albeit an assault rifle, and even then it's unable to make full use of it's range due to no ACOG.

IQ is an attacker not a defender. Also IQ doesn't have a DMR. So rather than lied, he seems to just be an idiot.

no defender has an AR. Jager and Valk are the only ones who have something close to it and they are Carbines which are a class of rifle between SMG and AR. Jager's weapon may be based on an AR but if you read the weapon description, it states it's a Carbine.

It's description lists it as a carbine, but for all intents and purposes the game considers it an "assault rifle" since the game doesn't differentiate between a carbine and an assault rifle (hence why the R4-C and 416-C can gain credits towards rifle-based weekly challenges)

i forgot about Vigil, his weapon is a carbine too? i thought it was more an SMG weapon by its appearance and how it has almost no recoil which is a common feature on SMG weapons especially Bandit.

Valk has a MPX which is classified as an SMG.

Jager has a 416-C Carbine which is classified as an Assault rifle

Valk and Vigil will get smg kills.
and
Jager will get Assault Rifle kills for the purposes of dailies and weeklies.


Jager is the only character that has an Assault Rifle on the defenders side.

well since they dont have LMG challenges, i guess they have to classify LMG weapons as something? I think, Cap, Fuze, IQ and Zophia all have LMG's for attackers and Tachanka has an LMG emplacement. All attack operators have ARs but only a handful have LMG...

I think the reason none/very few* of the Defenders have Rifles/DMRs is because they'd excel at spawn peeking which I think Ubisoft is trying to avoid.
