They specifically said "Really big expansions are likely to be paid for while we also intend for some smaller free updates.".
It's right there on the Kickstarter page from 8 years ago: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous/description
The base game has also had multiple free updates for almost 6 years now (every update also improves the base game), and the single paid update (Horizons) completed 3 years ago, since when there have been multiple free updates to that as well.
They'll just ignore this outright. They know they're wrong, they just enjoy nagging.
Yes, I don't want to know what level of management is required to allocate resources productively over such a long period of time, to sustain such a specific project. Horizons is a few years old, ED isn't the hottest seller of all time, and one can only dump so much money into ARX.
We need to appreciate that their business model has sustained a very niche title for four/five years, and with these improvements to the game's life, albeit with a price tag, we'll manage another five, and so on.
If the servers are on, I'm happy. ED is a whole world on its own, and a very welcome pseudo-realistic escape from games with more traditional mechanics.
Definitely, and unlike Star Citizen, it'll actually run at a decent framerate...
Though I gotta echo what some others have said...ship interiors and inside of space stations first please...
