Failed to Communicate with Authentication Server
Picked up the game because the DLC was on sale, and after installing, running the launcher, connecting my Steam account, I run into an error message saying log in error with the failed to communicate with authentication server, check internet connection and try again later.

I have unlinked and relinked Steam account, reset router, disabled firewall entirely and reset computer, tested internet speed (117 mbs with powerline adapter connection), done every Steam platform port forwarding recommended on the website, and just now tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

I am at like 110 minutes of "playtime" just from trying to troubleshoot from the launcher and seriously debating refunding with the time I have remaining.

Submitted a ticket to Frontier but wondering if anyone could possibly help me because I am beyond frustrated at this point.

EDIT/UPDATE: Received help from my support ticket. Apparently, I had to get the CD key from my game library and then go to my Frontier account via a browser and input the CD key to my account. I won't lie, I have been a Steam user for almost two decades and NEVER had something so backwards as this. Seems genuinely confusing to need to validate I own the game beyond linking my Steam account to my Frontier account.

My #1 recommendation whenever there is an issue with elite is to restart steam. XD
(#2 is checking ingame Options - Network - Network Adapter <- this can change)

Thank you for the recommendation. I had restarted Steam as well, logged out, back in, and restarted PC.

I did everything on that page you linked except the clock sync, which I have not tried yet but that seems absolutely insane. I will give it a go later and appreciate your advice. I have also submitted a ticket but no response yet.

Usually this issue is caused by players not logging into an account which has access to the game itself. If you made an account with us in the past, all you need to do is to log into it, and you can play. If you've made a ticket, we will be able to sort you out from there!

I get the same bs error i'd like to shove the ticket up your fundament for implementing this ubisoft clone launcher, plague on all your houses.

The launcher has nothing to do with it; it has always been the method for selecting which version of elite you want to play. If you contact support they can help you out.

Yeah bought the DLC, created an account and linked it, and get this exact same issue. Very frustrating. I did create a ticket with the dev, given their site says they're getting an 'unusually high amount of tickets' (wonder why), who knows how long it'll take. I'll give it a day and ask for a refund if they just flake out.

That's weird. They haven't used CD keys since 2019.

Did you restart Steam?
I get the same error, game won't start because of ”
Failed to Communicate with Authentication Server”

“Check internet connection” If I didn't have internet I could send this post ;-) Find the error.


I have found a solution. I delete the game and that's it.

I don't want to have anything more to do with Frontier. I was already really annoyed by Planet Zoo. Bad GUI, crashes and much more.

I'm no longer annoyed by it.

Did you read OP solution at the end?

Most issues with elite can be solved by restarting steam due to using steam authentication servers; some updates can get stuck on steam. (restarting forces the steam update)

Otherwise:
"Failed to communicate with server":
First check correct email/account is being used, or log out launcher then restart steam.
^ this happens more often than people think unfortunately.

Not all ISPs work well with elite, and in some cases VPN won't work either.
IF your net supports IPv6, enable it INGAME and turn OFF IPv4, restart game.
