Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous

Horrible Performance on Odyssey
So im sitting here since about one hour in the options menu.

Point here is that many settings give only a very small boost.
So now i can deicde to i have a pixelated mess and barely can read the interface or have heavy fps dips.(from 90 fps down to 30-40
Technically the choice between a bucket full of pee or a bucket full of sh*t

Did anyone figured out how they can set this game up to have a proper experience?

Thank you in Advance and safe travels Commander.

I still cannot play Odyssey on my Sapphire RX 6800 b/c there is this weird blue overlay on all of the planets that goes through the cockpits and everything else. It doesn't crash with orange sidewinder anymore but it is still unplayable.

Try wiping your ED graphics settings folder and then rerun.

Go into display settings, quality, set Supersampling to "x1" and Upscaling to Normal (which equals off). It sounds like your initial Odyssey experience is due to those settings by default being dumb. This is a known issue

It all goes down to 2 things really. First one : FoV (Field of View). Game even have TWO SEPPARATE settings, one for "on-foot" and second for rest. I've had terrible fps only while being on-foot, so i slide that "on-foot" slider all the way down... and damn, completely different experience. That was the biggest fps boost by one option i've ever had.

Second thing : resolution. Here i recommend to use Fidelity CAS upscaling and then play with supersampling values. I could get down to 0.65 while still being able to read everything at easy (at 0.5 it was a blurry mess for me), but you might have different comfortable value depending on preferences and your native resolution.

IMHO the real upgrade would start at an AMD RX 6700 or RX 6700 XT or a nVIDEA 3060. Those cards even outperform a 1080ti.
Also the PCI 4.0 interface with 16 lanes should speed up data transfer between CPU & GPU, and some claim that's the real cause of Odysseys bad performance.

In the end it doesnt matter if the minimum requirements are a flat out lie.
Recommened is a R280x and the optimisation almost non existent since even modern high end card users report heavy FPS dips with eye candy settings. If you buy a Video card for about 500-800€ then you expect high Framerates on high settings.

I can play horizon on 1440p (or 1080p upscaled to 1.50x) with mixed ultra and high settings with almost zero lags.
Now i struggle with 1080p with 1x on low settings. And under recommended GPU i understand that this GPU can handle mixed Medium-High settings with a stable FPS.

I even have no problem to go down with resolution to save Databandwith for my GPU.
But these Jagged edges make these resolutions unplayable since i even cannot read my onboard computer. I tried Reshade for Antialiasing but those shaders cannot detect the jagged edges. So i bet that the ingame shaders have the same problem. Im sure the complains on steam and Reddit were much less if players could turn down the resolution.

And that there are already Programs who disable certain Shaders to boost performance just confirms what many people here say.

Technically Odyssey is in the Alpha Phase. And yet they release it as final release.
Nothing is more shocking than the truth that some fans refuse to recognize and even defend such behavior. So it's no longer surprising that many publishers release half-finished garbage.

Edit:

Are you on AMD or nVidia? This sounds like a good idea. I was stuck with FSR but this just sclaes down so it looks like 800x600 in other games.

Actually? The most horrible thing among all, when you forced to point out basic things to some morons, even toddlers supposed to understand and humiliating to both parties. To the one you forced to handle as a clueless fool, and to the one, whom forced to deal with these clueless fools whom just don't stop bugging him.

Therefore the three wise monkey aka ghosting.

No, he is right 1060 6gb version is about 980 level.

Yes, the 1060 and the 980 are close. The 1060 is actually a bit slower, but the extra VRAM helps mitigate that in some games.

That's not the problem, or what I was on about though. He's saying his AMD 290 is on par with them... It's actually much closer to the 970 (and it's still not quite as good as that).

The R9 290 Tri-X is a custom card which is overclocked by Factory with a bigger Cooler.
Its on Par with the 290X (in some games faster and in some games slower)
And the 290X is on par with the 1060 (6GB) only 8% difference. Thats just a few frames which you will not recognize ingame. While playing you wont look all time long in the FPS counter.
Plus AMD optimized these cards with better drivers.
The card is with a old driver from about 2014 slower than modern drivers.

As the title of the Website already state.(Userbenchmark) these are pure Benchmarks with some Toaster tests like CS:GO and older Triple A titles.

But as i said in Post No. 50. The Problem is not the Hardware.
Its the game itself so this tech talk is absolute Offtopic.
If I want hardware advice then I ask my Vendor who knows my system since i bought my parts there.
As i wrote on Page 1 on this Thread i cannot afford a new GPU which were a real upgrade since i have bills to pay.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but this is really getting on my nerves as it doesn't solve my problem at all.

Cheers
It runs fine fore me I usually get around 120 to 90 fps. However I do have an RTX 3080 a Ryzen5 600X and 32 gb of ram.
Runs okay if I play at 480p.
Dude, I get it...

It was a great card when it released...

The fact it's not melted/failed/burnt out yet, shows you got a good sample...

But unfortunately you'll have to face it at some point: that card is almost a decade old now... Over 9 years... In fact, it's about a year older than Elite Dangerous.

I know the weak point in my main rig is currently my GPU. It's a tough pill to swallow at the moment, but arguing about it doesn't help anyone.

Sorry fella. Just the way it is.

I was hoping if there is a solution like ingame settings or what is maybe possible through legal modifications.

Do you have a good solution for Hardware (eg RX 6500 , Gtx 1060 ,R9 290) in this level or not?
Instead you just keep telling same stuff i already know over and over again and just say i should face the realit and even dig out benchmarks etc. just to prove you are right.
:steamfacepalm: Do you think people are dumb AF?

People dont need to be Einstein to know that upgrade is always a solution.

It's as I said at the very start of the thread, you can have the game run reasonably but look terrible or you can have it look nicer but run badly. There is no way to have both a good looking game and it running well, currently. Maybe there will be some performance improvements in the next update due tomorrow...I think.

I have a R9 280 (even below the minimum specs) and get 30 fps in 1080p on the ground in Odyssey and I played Horizions in 1440 p.

The 500 - 800€ price class would have been a 6700 XT / 3060 in early 2022.
The 6900 & 3080 are not getting into the 800 € price class.

I can play horizon on 1440p (or 1080p upscaled to 1.50x) with mixed ultra and high settings with almost zero lags.
Horizion is a game from 2015, and you can play it in 1440p with those setting on a high end card from 2014? Yes, that should be normal.

Now i struggle with 1080p with 1x on low settings. And under recommended GPU i understand that this GPU can handle mixed Medium-High settings with a stable FPS.
The GTX 780 / R9 280x is the minimum specs for Odyssey.

Recomended is a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB VRAM) / AMD RX 580 (8 GB VRAM)

No problem. You're comparing stock 1060 with overclocked R9, look at any Asus or MSI 1060 and they have 20% higher clock than 1060. But its not my point.

I feel you about upgrading stuff, I'm on the same boat with 1060 which is slowly going out of commision.

So my advise - just refund the DLC and enjoy Horizons 4.0. You won't miss a thing and 4.0 runs adequately (50-60fps on 1080p) but you have to sacrifice 1.5x supersampling but can compensate it with SMAA which doesn't tax GPU (at least my 1060 doesn't suffer from it). Other settings are mostly High with couple on Medium and a few on Ultra.

Fly safe, cmdr!
