Excluding all those (which the T8 is better at anyway, barring combat), there's only one left...
Mining.
And even that's debatable...
Edit: Clarification
For combat it is a tough choice between my Python Mk2, FDL, and Mamba - or maybe I just want to have fun and take the Vulture or Imp. Courier out for a spin.
Erm... What? Python is a slow lumbering brick compared to the T8...
I still have yet to fully engineer anything lol. I have a DBX that I often switch to a "Pre engineering" config so I can check out some of the places many skip over now with massive jump ranges.
I just consider engineering as another part of the game like mining, ground combat, search and rescue. It's nice that engineering is available for us to choose to do if we want to.
I don' think engineering is really optional except for exploration & xenobiology. As our combat rank climbs, so does the difficulty of enemies. At the higher levels you pretty much have to be engineered to survive combat against the engineered NPC ships, especially if you are a mediocre player like me.
