Doesn't matter if it's low/major/pristine reserves either... I did some hunting yesterday for about an hour and a half and got around 3 million on a major reserves, metal rich ring, and have gotten good amounts at other rings like Rocky/low reserve. What you could do if it's going wrong is just exit the RES and enter back in, or logout, log in and reset the instance... that's going to reset which enemies are spawned more frequently
But as far as I know there's no inherently good areas, although I only hunt in Metal Rich or Metallic rings for "luck".
edit: The only good type of RES site that would come to mind is one with a station close nearby where you can turn in bounties and refill ammo quickly without going too far away, there's a ton of those everywhere, but as far as better spawns... don't think so.
If you've entered an RES and you find that only Cobras and below are spawning, you've probably gotten a low intensity RES. Simply jump out of the RES, fly a loop and re-enter it. Fly around a bit and give the instance time to warp in ships. Repeat until you start seeing Imperial Clippers, Federal Dropships and Anacondas. It should only take 2-3 tries, tops.
The only "good" RES is one that's near a station, to minimize your downtime dedicated to refuel/repair/rearm.
Edit: Additionally, if you're a member of the public PVE group Mobius, feel free to add me (Commander name is Sapholin) and I can show you to several RES sites that are less than 10 seconds away from a station.
RES are best for bounty hunting, so look for "Extraction" economy systems, with a ringed gas giant
even if it doesn't have metal/metallic odds are such a ringed world has resource extraction sites
but nearly always when it does have metallic/metal rich rings
yes it' sbest to have a station that's close by, but I currently hunt in one where the stations are 40,000 LS away but I get good hunting in it and the system has lots of good upgrades if I want to swap ship parts around :p
for best combo if possible youd want high tech/etraction as that means it will almost certianly have RES if it has a ringed gas giant, but high tech also means better ship upgrades are sold!
Also, Bounty hunting, like the other professions, is more or less based on quantity rather than quality. You rack up your riches through how much you kill rather than what you kill. By the time you get that anaconda kill, I'd have killed about 5 Cobras summing up to about the same value in bounties. That doesn't mean just aim for a ship type, just look for the faster(and safer) options based on your skill and ship.
Also, if you don't know where to find RES spots, look on System View for ringed planets. Those are primarily where you'll find those.
If you don't mind traveling, Fong Wang is the most profitable I've seen, as it hemoragges big ships every time I visit.
That being said, here's a list of RES sites that the community has deemed convienent.
