Solo mode - what is it for?
I get jumped (interdicted) at least as often in solo mode as I do in open mode. Perhaps more often. The NPCs currently seem to do a better job of interdiction than the human players.

So if Solo mode isn't for avoiding interdiction, I really don't see any advantage to it at all. Why does it exist?

This thread gives me a lot of optimism, actually. To be honest, it was the MMO aspect of this game that has kept me from buying it so far.

Perhaps I will pick this up in the near future.

Even in open mode the galaxy is rather quiet and unpopulated. There are lots of "populated" systems with resources, space stations...and hardly any real players visiting. Yet.

Solo thing that happened: I was in a system and saw an "UNKNOWN" sun. Decided to go check it out. Should have dropped off my Bauxite for my job first at the station then headed to that. I scanned the sun (took me a few mins to get there).. saw a signal source.. decided to check it out.. ambush.. I was too close to the star heat was getting me and I couldn't charge my fsd fast enough. . Cargo hold got damaged and my cargo was jettisoned. Got away though. :)

Ever take E:D on the go, to a place with crappy internet? Open play is a rubberband fest, unplayable. This is another reason for it

Solo is like playing the original elite..

Solo mode is for getting fast parking at outposts.
Humans are easier to avoid than NPC in Open unless you fly in your sleep.

It is for experiencing Elite in its original, intended, purest, and most mind-blowingly atmospheric self.

If you play on your own group it's pretty much solo mode, only you can have your friends join in if they ever want to. That isn't a problem unless your friends list is too inclusive for your own good, and even then those people should have a reason to join your group and find you there in the first place.

It's for people who live in the sticks like me and lag out when the get 4 people in the same system.

If you get interdicted by NPC but have no cargo, basically just your ship....what happens? Do you have to pay them something...do they kill you....do they just go on their way?

NPC pirates used to be all psycho killers. Now they're smarter. They all have cargo scanners and always scan your ship before they start shooting. And if you have no cargo, they mutter dark things about your general uselessness and leave you to fly away in peace. It means that flying an unarmed, even unshielded explorer is now a much safer option.

On the other hand, flying with cargo seems to emit some sort of signal only NPCs can detect from supercruise. "I've come a long way for what's in your hold!" etc, like they magically know you have loot.

200 hours and all I have ever done is solo. Its pretty fun and totally doable in my opinion. I dont want humans messing everything up, and like the consistent skill of NPC (there are different skill levels with them though.) I dunno. Just prefer a game this big to be a solo and let me do my own thing.

If you work it right you earn your first mill or 2 in solo THEN switch.
Or you play entirely in private groups - with friends that you can trust only. I always hated the idea that absolutely ANYWHERE is PK Land - dunno why but PK's are worse than NPCs to a lot of people - still none of the modes afford complete safety from all threats - and some of the worst are from NPCs - but atleast the NPCs will largely be balanced for the area your in.

This is the furthest thing from an MMO, it's solo with tacked on multiplayer
