Amateur Bounty Hunter looking for optimal ship/setup
I've been doing a few combat missions on and off and I feel I'm ready to start bounty-hunting small ships. I have a few questions, though.
1: What are good types of ships? I'm currently looking at a Cobra III for about 370K. Is this a good investment for hunting? It also comes with a default of 18 cargo space, so I can imagine it'd be a huge step up from my loaned sidewinder

2: Where do I go to get better parts? Considering I'm rather stranded in my starter system, I'd like to know where I can go to get better parts for my ships.

3: What are good places to hunt for criminals? (I understand that resource extraction sites are generally a good place to look, but I have no clue how to find and track them. That's a question in and of itself)
Thanks lads

Resource Extraction Sites are the way forward, look for planets with rings, go explaoring till you find a nice system then get a viper, farm bounties until you can afford a bigger ship to start deep space exploring or trading. Thats my plan anyway.

for me it's nav points. killed a andaconda and got a 150K bounty form him. *though i need to redeem some money form the empire and the alliance*

Now i was either gonna get a viper or a Cobra but can't decide.

Found a nice system with a docking station nearby an RES and Im making 100k+ at each trip if im unlucky and dont get anacondas :P ...not sure if nav points are better or worse, its probably random but whenever I tried nav points they were fairly quite.

Care to PM me this system ;)
Hi there,

Q1: The best cheap bounty hunter ship is by far the Viper (it also has the coolest engine sound in the game).

If you can't afford to get a Viper you can start out in an Eagle. The Cobra is also good for bounty hunting but it is a more versatile ship that has more cargo space etc. The Cobra is a jack of all trades that is also good for Pirating (where you need the cargo space for loot).

Q2: Look for High Tech Economis on your Galaxy map. They will have a good selection of modules and ships available for sale at any given time.

Q3: Every system has a Nav Beacon where all ships jumping into the system arrives. This is an excellent place to hang out and bounty hunt especially in Anarchy systems.

I did a short video on bounty hunting that will help you get started. I also did videos on a lot of the other basic concepts in the game that are all in an Elite Dangerous Playlist on my Youtube channel. Here's the link for the Bounty Hunting video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kZcgndAAU8
Note::
If you don't carry any cargo, you are less likely to be attacked.

any system with metal rich rings, or rings in general. Hop in and kill large ships for 100-200k each

Viper for bounties, Cobra for trading. 18 slots on the Cobra mk III is awesome for medium-scale trading.
Cobra is great for Bounty Hunting and Trading, has the same weapons slots as a Viper with the added bonus of being able to carry 38 tons of cargo as well. I love my Cobra and have it fully A-Specced. I would never sell it. If you get jumped while trading in it you can always turn around and fight back.

This. I found a system full of extraction sites. One of those sites is a non-stop mining/pirating operation and I make 1-2 mil each time I go there.
Eagle then viper then vulture

cobra is a ship for pirates / smugglers (and explorers and traders while working up to bigger stuff)

true bounty hunters sell cargo racks and replace them with shield banks / interdictors / warp trail scanners etc..

Eagle/Viper for me Boba Fett feels and a Adder for exploreing and hauling.
