The person asked if the game is a MMO, the person did not ask if the game was a MMO RPG, your answer was that a MMO and MMORPG are the same thing and that the game in not a MMO because it's not a MMO RPG. Don't think that is anything close to what your now trying to claim. But hey to each his own. The only thing people replied to you was mearly that MMO != MMORPG and the game in full right is an MMO, you then tried to create examples of multiplayer games that are not MMOs that can be played offline in single player, where as ED requires internet even for "single" player because everyone is tied to the same ecconomy. You then tried to argue that items have infinate supply, when the supply is very finite. And then you also say, and I quote "Elite isn't an mmo, unless we are all hosting our own mmos every time we play."...
Now your trying to say, oh yeah I know it's a MMO, I was arguing that it was, but only just? Funny thing is when people prove you wrong you can not just say "oh yeah that's what I was saying to", it's pretty obvious that you literitly said "This game is NOT A MMO", sure you can edit your post away to delete that line, but you still definitly said it and that post was quoted where you said that it is not a MMO even though people have proven by definition of MMO that it is.
Oh well, was fun for me as well, if you think that providing proof is a "knee jerk reaction" then you may want to look up the definition of a "knee jerk reaction" while you go to wikipedia to try to change the definition of MMO to try to go "see even in the definition of MMO according to wikipedia very first line says A MMO is a massively multiplayer online game with the execption of Elite Dangerous which would be considered a point and click game since you do a lot of pointing your ship and clicking buttons, thus the game is a point and click" ... Go ahead now, go change the definition of MMO to specificly say this game is not one and that this game is a point and click then come back to play some more. I find you rather silly and it is fun to play with silly people.
he asked if it was an mmo, i answered thats all that matters. if you didn't like my answer or it offended you in some way i apologize.
this is the whole point there is a definition of an mmo and then there is what one comes to expect from one. i think my first post quelled expectation quite well.
we can argue what it means to be an mmo till the cows come home. i updated my last post with a summary. include that in your quote.
Oh sad panda... I guess you don't like when you loss when people provide proof and don't just argue without evidence. Come back and play again once you learn how to debate, I wasn't even trying because you made it to easy by providing no proof against the proof given against you.
But back on topic again now to the OP, as people have stated and now proven because of silly man Heathy McGree, the game is by definition a MMO, it would probably fit under the full genre of MMO Space Sim, but yes even playing in single player, everything that everyone else playing the game does directly effects you since even in "single player" the ecconomy is tied to what everyone is doing and not just you.
you enjoy playing the game as an mmo, ill keep playing it as a single player game, i haven't seen or interacted with another person for over a week now. the massively multiplayer aspect of the game is Bulging indeed. Its so vast infact its reached infinite proportions and everyone has vanished.
again it wasn't my goal to PROVE the game ISN'T and mmo, I made that first post, now this bit might be a tricky for you to grasp, QUELL EXPECTATION of previous MMO experiences, Nothing more Nothing less.
Just stop trying, you really are just a sad panda, and it's gotten to the point where it's kinda sad how you keep trying and denying the fact that MMO has a definition in which this game meets in full and you keep going back to your "this isn't an RPG" statement. In the chance your just trying to troll, it's not working, if anything your persistance and changing your story every other post is just sad. And if your just some 12-17 year old ♥♥♥♥ who thinks that everything you think must be fact and anyone who says elsewise must be wrong, well you'll get a rude awakening soon enough that subjective is subjective and objective is objective... am I using to large of words for you there? Here let me rephrase that, opionion is opinion, and fact is fact, there maybe those words you can understand.
Re Edit: Sorry your icon looked like Hearthy's. So took that comment the wrong way.
i didn't say 'this isn't an RPG' i said it is an RPG because we play the role of a space pilot.
i'm also 28 thanks.
your the one who is getting moody over opinions i've already told you i don't care one micron. the funny part about this whole thing is your accusing me of trolling and being a 17 year old but i haven't once resorted to ad hominem like you have.
if we really want to get back on topic, star citizen might be the OPs best choice but i feel they both have similar multiplayer structures.
if one feels the urge to wait it out of SC, and you have the patients to do that, i would probably do that, it has a bigger budget and will more than likey end up as a better game on release as a result although that entirely comes down to various other factors.
if your itching for a space sim, and don't really care very much about what that entails elite is good in various ways. and will likely improve on many of them over time.
a player playing counterstrike or battlefield was never capable of walking or flying to another server to meet the rest of the playerbase.
in ED if there are 10k players on, i can fly, in game, not a server browser, to where they are.
all on 1 server.
Under your assumption, as I said before, I actually enjoy playing with people, so long as it stays cival and no one ends up getting butt hurt over it, though let's be fair here, you changed your story several times thoughout our little bit of playing with each other, which doesn't show any debating skills what so ever, if your going to try to debate something, don't keep changing your story, but do listen to both sides and not just your own.
I don't disagree with you that under what most people would consider a MMO it is not, in fact its very common for people to shorthand the genre MMORPG down to just MMO. So had you just agreed that both sides where right, that this game is by definition a MMO but that this game is not the standard view of what an MMO is, we could have just left it at that, both been fully correct without either person sounding like they are 5 year olds arguing over which super hero is better. But you kept at it trying to keep saying over and over that the game is not an MMO at all. So I kept proding just because it is amusing when people think that their opinion is fact.
I do hope you enjoyed our little, I wouldn't really call it a debate but, debate as much as I did. Let's both agree that the term MMO often doesn't mean what people think it means since until recently the only real genre that had games in MMO form was RPGs, it wasn't until recently that MMO FPS games and MMO Flight Sim games have really started to show up and so to many people MMO and MMORPG are interchangable. which this game definitly does not fit the MMORPG genre.
your still only potentially meeting them, the distance, whether you'll even match to them through the p2p, due to ping or region issues, its basically the same as having separate servers, the game world is persistent, the instances aren't. all of the game play takes place in those instances. which aren't persistent, and don't scale past 32. the influence on the back ground simulation is THE only part of the game that makes it an mmo that along with its persistent universe which are ofc tied together.
it can be misleading though because the effect on that universe is time gated and very minor until a certain point when a result is determined from an event.
so did you change your story hockey on the first page on your first post, you said 'Technically it is', before that 'Yes and No' so you weren't even sure either until the thread progressed.
I always end up getting a little blunt with the discussions it doesn't help when ppl start throwing around assumptions about ones character and age / state of mind / favourite food whatever.. it turned into a debate but honestly i only posted that list to really and truly get it out the way, if someone clicks on this thread, they now know they are not going to get Eve or Wow in space.
Others have already responed to this dreck, And they are correct your not listing MMO qualities. You dont even have your info strait.
so no large groups of ppl over 32- Per shard - But every MMO has a capacity limit per shard, or zone.
no boss fights- There are capital ships you can fight. So yes boss fights.
no end game - MMO's dont have an end game, They continue on and on.
no gear grinding - You upgrade you ship, you upgrade your modules. you have to grind credits to get these things.
no quest chains.- There are two large faction line quests you can go down.
no classes- combat, miner, explorer, trader, there is even a ranking system in game for each class.
no wow or eve like elements of any kind - It has a spacey element which is like eve.
no inventory/storage/bank- Yes the game is very much lacking here.
no money transfer - Yes the game is very much lacking here
no mail - Yes the game is lacking here.
no player trading - Yes the game is lacking here
no auction house - Yes the game is lacking here
no arenas or battlegrounds - The entire universe is once you get 5km away from a station.
no guilds - Guilds, clans, corporations, Wings. Oh wait it does have wings. But yea the game could do more for this area of the game.
no crafting - Thats just content that gets added in over time.
no player housing - Thats just content that gets added in over time.
Its like me saying WOW does not have spaceships so it cannot be an MMO, Becouse any MMO that is worth a grain has spaceships.
think like dark souls a single player game where you might occasionally get interference form other players. but also think like diablo where you can make a private group with your friends.
its not a true mmo
star citizen can't be played yet, who knows
