The main point about Elite Dangerous is the fact what it is a modern remake of the old Elite game from the 80s.
Elite was and is a first person dogfight game with direct control, while EvE is a point and click game.
And we all know that the real EvE killer will be GTA 5, because that's a real sandbox game
(Any EvE player must no complain that GTA 5 doesn't have a real, player driven economy) ;-)
I'm wondering how many ships will be added to the game. Just for comparison, here is a list of ships that players can own and fly in EVE Online. I would list fittings, too, but that list is like 20 pages long. Considering purchasing this game if it has or will have that kind of diversity for longevity.
Keep in mind that each ship can be completely customized with a selection of thousands of "equipment", or fittings.

It's not EVE man. Comparison completed.
No, the similarities don't end there.
In both Elite and EvE, you purchase a ship that can be destroyed, from a player driven economic system, insure that ship, and choose fittings for the ship to customize it, and then you engage in either PvE or PvP combat for control over sectors of space, create "clans", mine asteroids, spy on other player's "clans", explore space, engage in political diplomacy, the similarities go on and on and on.
Oh for f*ck's sake... Eve has specialized ships which somehow emulate the classic mmo roles, no such thing exists in elite. At the moment the plan is to have 40 flyable ships.
