Lets compare "Elite: Dangerous" to "EVE Online"
Simply because prior to release I saw people claiming it to be the game that will kill EVE.

Moving this topic here:

I think we should be comparing this game to the most successful space sim: EVE Online

EvE Online has about 5,000+ solar systems, about 150+ different ships to pilot, about 2,000+ different items (fittings, subsystems, etc) to choose from to equip your ship, and enough happens in the game that they are releasing a History of EVE book, showcasing all the crazy ♥♥♥♥ that has happened in the EVE world. Some events even made the headline news on TV.

CCP, the EvE Online developers, are so good to their players. They have the Council of Stellar Management, where each year players vote for a few player-candidates to be flown out to CCP Headquarters, in real life not in the game, and represent the rest of the playerbase in talks about what should be added or changed about the game. The players are directly involved in the continuing development process.

EvE, being popular for 12 years, is a prime example of how a good space sim should be made. Of course, the piloting mechanics are old now, so we need a new space sim to take its place. It doesnt look like Elite: Dangerous is taking itself seriously enough to be the one for the job.

lets face it they were not going to be able to release a game with 12 years worth of content development to match Eve.

but in some ways you do have to look at the fact that it exists so you do have a choice, a game that will get better, or a game that is already established, Eve is sub based, Elite is B2P so there are quite a few reasons to pick Elite over Eve even if its no where near the level of depth or complexity.

I think not having a paid subscription model is showing that they aren't planning for the long-term. EvE wouldn't have been able to sustain itself and its 23 different expansion packs over 12 years on just the initial game purchases alone, they need those subs.

I'm not saying Elite looks like a bad game, it just doesn't look like an EvE replacement like some people have claimed it to be. I'm seriously considering buying Elite, just not quite convinced yet, as I have 900+ hours on EvE, I may be disappointed by spending 60 dollars for Elite. Not sure yet. I could get a whole year's worth of subscriptions (via third party web sites) to EvE for that 60 dollars.

(This thread is NOT here to bash Elite. It is for discussion to help myself and others decide if they should purchase or not. Lets discuss the future roadmap of Elite, and compare it to an already successful predecessor.)

Anybody who claims that Elite Dangerous will kill EvE ( or Star Citizen ) is just an idiot.

The main point about Elite Dangerous is the fact what it is a modern remake of the old Elite game from the 80s.
Elite was and is a first person dogfight game with direct control, while EvE is a point and click game.

And we all know that the real EvE killer will be GTA 5, because that's a real sandbox game
(Any EvE player must no complain that GTA 5 doesn't have a real, player driven economy) ;-)

Why compare the two? Just because they are space sims? Sure they have similarities but the differences is what seperates which one a person would rather play and enjoy more. I don't believe Elite Dangerous will kill EVE, nor do I believe Star Citizen will either. Sure these two games will probably get some of the ppl out of the waves of fresh bloods that try EVE and don't stick with it. I'm surprised how long EVE has lasted with a subscription and it will continue to last a bit longer. EVE will die when its dam ready to die, and I dont see it happening soon.

The issue is that when you compare the two, you arn't comparing the two. You are comparing a game that is over 10 years old with numerous expansions with one that is less than a year old.

All 23 expansions for EvE online were "free", you just have to pay a monthly 10 dollar subscription, which is worth it.

ah never played it so i thought there was one or two you did have to buy.

I'm wondering how many ships will be added to the game. Just for comparison, here is a list of ships that players can own and fly in EVE Online. I would list fittings, too, but that list is like 20 pages long. Considering purchasing this game if it has or will have that kind of diversity for longevity.

Keep in mind that each ship can be completely customized with a selection of thousands of "equipment", or fittings.

Comparing elite to eve is like comparing an apple to a brick, yes both are red, the similarities end here.
ZombieHunter 5 abr. 2015 às 16:24
Wow dude keeps posting.

No, the similarities don't end there.

In both Elite and EvE, you purchase a ship that can be destroyed, from a player driven economic system, insure that ship, and choose fittings for the ship to customize it, and then you engage in either PvE or PvP combat for control over sectors of space, create "clans", mine asteroids, spy on other player's "clans", explore space, engage in political diplomacy, the similarities go on and on and on.

Oh for f*ck's sake... Eve has specialized ships which somehow emulate the classic mmo roles, no such thing exists in elite. At the moment the plan is to have 40 flyable ships.

I think it might make more sense to compare ED to the X series, but that's just me.
Slopey 5 abr. 2015 às 16:26
EvE is not Elite. We don't need posts full of EvE ship names thanks, and everything which can be said has been said in here already.
