Equipment: Class and Rating
Hi there,

since I've found no real good information in the whole Internet ;) I will try posting here:

What is Item class and rating? So far I know that class is somewhat the "size" of a part. But does it change the effiency of a part?

So is a Class 1 Rating A FSD worse than a class 3 Rating A FSD?

Thanks in advance.

Number is the 'power' of the thing, letter is the 'quality'.

Bigger number FSD -> go further.

Lower letter -> better quality (can be less power, less mass for same performance)

Class = size
Raing = quality

The ship has internal emplacements of certain size, you can't fit a class 3 into a class 2.

Upgrading to Rating D is always sensible.
D has the best power/mass ration. Going from D to C, B and A give you more powerful equipment, but with a higher mass.
So it's sensible only to upgrade those items above D rating that are important to your actual gameplay.
A trader for example don't get any benefits from upgrading his powerplant to C or B rating, a figther would.

In the end it boils down to how deep your wallet is and how much higher grade stuff you can cram into a ship wtihout it turning off on you.

If you're in a combat ship and bought too much crap past your capicitance rating, just disable your cargo scoop, it takes up 7% total power. And since cargo is nearly worthless in ED right now, there's no point in using one in a combat ship. Yes, some nerd will probably post that cargo can be worth alot, but no...just no. Not from an npc ship and player ships dont drop cargo after death.

You will never find a beam laser for example, Class 3, rating C, at a higher rating in any other station. All modules have the same rating and class at every station. There are no rare, common or uncommon weapons or modules that are better than one you've already found in a station. Just go to the wealthy stations to find alll the best stuff.

Ratings:
E - the worst all round performance
D - Better performance than E, lowest mass
C - Good all round performance for the price
B - Better performance than C but higher mass = better integrity for subsystems but will lower your jump range and agility (except with thrusters where agility will be improved over lower ratings)
A - Best all round.

Simples ^^

Like folks say, traders often go for as much D rated stuff as possible to extend jump ranges. Fighters need to strike a balance between mass, power draw and performance.

Quoting that means 3A FSD is better than 2A FSD?

Certain modules have a mass requirement fo optimal work, in other words undersizing an FSD for example would significantly reduce your jump range.

A 3A FSD will have a bigger range in a given ship than a 2A one, so yes. You've just put a 3l V8 in it rather than a 2lV8. Okay, poor analogy, but still...

Okay, there seem to be some mixed conceptions about what the gradings actually do, in terms of performance and qualities that they lend your ship, so, here's what I've gleaned over the three years I've been playing:

Now the number is not the "power" of the module, rather it's the size of the module.

The letters go like this:

A has the best overall performance and best heat efficiency, slightly less weight than Grade B
B has the most module integrity, but is also heaviest
C is all-around okay, about the same weight as Grade A
D is the lightest module grade
E has the worst performance for a given class, but it uses the least amount of power.

This might also be of use; outdated, but a good place to get some information:

Steam won't allow links; just look for this on your favorite search engine:
