They can do it, but if people do it themselves they will have a direct influence on the galaxy and the direction the game takes.
Mapping the galaxy takes resources and a LOT of time, and all you get out of it is your name on the system map if you did something first. Isn't much.
My current home system isn't great. 4 earthlikes, but long distance to travel for the nearest starport and zero rings for mining. By selecting and designing my own system I can put the main starport close to the main star, ensure i pick one with good rings for mining, nice planets to put settlements on, etc.
Just to be clear with the Beta, any values including distances are subject to change, which is mainly the point of the Beta. We're aiming to start smaller so we can scale up rather than start big and go "Oh no, we have really overestimated this". So don't worry if it's not ideal right away, just constructively share your feedback and we'll be going through all of it as we review the Beta
Yeah, i read that.
But 10LY is, in my opinion, way off ideal, even for the beta. If they are wanting to keep new systems within BGS expansion range, then 20LY would have been fine as well, all the way up to 60LY (max BGS expansion range, IIRC?).
