can you get the multi -limpit controller to collect? Or does it have to be specific to the control function itself?

there are multiple different multi-limpet controllers. Each of them covers several functions, which are controlled by setting them to different fire groups.

Three of them can handle collecting - Mining, Operations, and Universal. These limpet controllers are larger than the standard and have a fixed slot size, with Universal the largest at a minimum slot size of 7 and the others requiring size 3.

ok great- so i would have to get the collection limpet controller for collecting "black boxes" or "asteroid chunks" while another controller is for hatch breaking and another is for repair.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a limpet can only be programmed to do one task - once it's deployed under that task, it can't be modified.

You can install limpet controllers that have multiple functions to choose from, but a limpet can only be programmed with one of them.

mining multi limpet does prospecting and collecting, the universal limpet controller does everything

If you are only casually mining, then a multi limpet controller (with collector limpets prospector limpets) is fine. Its also fine if you intend to pick up materials, black boxes and escape pods or other space junk. But if you are mining solely to make money, a prospector limpet module will give you a better yield for mining, especially the higher letter grades. And a collector limpet controller extends the range, life, and amount of limpets.
I used a mining limpet controller at first when I was short of space but switched to separate units on my mining specific ships.
