how can I scan a nav beacon?
google doesn't help. Everything I read about it seems outdated. Google tells me to target it. I do that. Literally nothing happens. I'm 20 meters in front of it and nothing happens. I go into contacts and select the navigation beacon, nothing happens. I have tried this on several beacons, it never works.

so how do I scan it? I have a mission to find a black box, so I assume I need to scan a nav beacon. But how does that work? do I need special equipment or something? This is so frustrating. I just wanna play the game but I have to alt tab every 2 minutes to google stuff because nothing is explained well, and all the google stuff is outdated too on top of that...

I hope somebody can help me

Drop out of supercruise at the Nav Beacon (usually near a star).

Once out of supercruise, use the radar on your dashboard to align your ship with the white square (this is the Nav Beacon).

Make sure there's no line above or below the white box and then select it if you're close enough.

Doing so, will start scanning the Nav Beacon.

Note: It's possible that the white box on your radar is a Wake or Materials/Commodities. Nevertheless, if you have too many things, then use the left panel, select "Contacts" navigate to select "Nav Beacon" and on your radar the white box with "<>" will be the Nav Beacon. Approach it and when you're close enough the scan will start automatically.

thank you! it worked. I had no idea I need to look out for white stuff

but anyway, sadly it didnt solve my problem. my mission didnt update. I still have no idea where the black box is. my mission just tells me to searxch signal sources in the system to find it. No idea what that means , I thought the nav beacon would solve it.

How do I find the black box?
Go into supercruise and through your nav panel.

? ok and then what? I have no location for any black box
Once you go into supercruise go to your left panel (default key is the number 1 key but not the numpad number 1 to pull it up) and look for a blue signal source (mission signal sources are blue in that panel), click it to target it and go there, drop from supercruise at the mission signal source and scoop up the black box/boxes either with your cargo scoop or collector limpets. Beware because sometimes hostile ships jump in when you're salvaging a black box, so you may need to either fight for it or loot 'n scoot.

there is nothing there. as if i had no mission at all.
If you scanned the Nav Beacon, you might have gotten a text message.

Read it, it might be sending you to another system. If not, then go back into supercruise and go as slowly as possible with supercruise, then activate your FSS.

Now at the bottom, slide the slider to the far left and move the camera around in the system. Look for an orange circle. This will be your target and/or target area.

You might need to adjust your keybinds or at least have a look what buttons you need. I play on a controller with custom mappings therefore I can't help in that regard.

Edit: By the way, don't be frustrated or overwhelmed. The game has this steeper learning curve but it's something that made it that much more immersive, for me at least. Either way, just take your time, experiment, and if it doesn't work, write again and I'll try to help you more. I check the forums often, but apologise if I reply too late. Just don't feel bad about it, don't stress, give it time and you'll start understanding it all.

i didnt get a text message when I scanned the nav beacon. I'm gonna try the FSS thing now...even though I already did that couple hours ago but I guess can't hurt.

Btw here is the screenshot of my nav panel. I filtered it so signal sources. https://imgur.com/a/8wBN1zM

there is no orange circle, I don't see anything orange at all. I already found everything in the system, planets etc. so I can't find anything new either

I'm losing my mind. I have never been this frustrated, just trying to finish one of my first missions ever... why is this so complicated and terribly explained by the game? WHERE IS THE BLACK BOX AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

this is the mission btw https://imgur.com/VeIbyfS
ok looks like I wasn't going crazy. This mission was simply bugged. I accepted another salvage blackbox mission. This time it worked perfectly. I entered the system, got a mission update, then in nav panel there was a blue signal, I dod go there, scooped up the box and done.

The other mission didn't have anything like that. It was simply bugged. I'm just very unlucky :shizukaSkeptic:

Thank you for all your help

Oh great news!

Also be careful, purple missions are illegal missions.

Is this a bad thing? I assume they pay more but if you get scanned you are in trouble? Or is there anything else I need to know?

Sorry I missed the rest of the thread until now. I am happy it worked out!

Illegal missions mean you can get fined or become wanted. IMO both would be frustrating when you're just trying to learn the basics.
