If you haven't purchased the game yet, you are going to be better off getting
the Deluxe edition which includes Odyssey as it saves you a couple of bucks and it contains quite a bit of content.

Odyssey is fun, very fun.

No reason to play without it, game is quite different and you should see how you run it right away as well rather than later as odyssey runs way worse and I had to upgrade my PC to even be able to play in certain areas.

On foot combat is the fastest way to gain combat rank (faster than shooting ships)

Exobiology (scanning alien plants) is the fastest way to make money.

So yes, Odyssey speeds progression.
while im not too focused on the on-foot part of Odyssey, it does bring a lot of nice features like exobiology scanning as a genuine source of money even in the late game, gives you access to some neat customisation to your character, and im pretty sure some content updates are becoming reliant on Odyssey

hopefully this DLC gets merged into the game at some point, similar to what they did with Horizons, which added the SRV Rover, planet landing and such

all in all, if you think Elite is a game you wanna spend time in and actually progress through, i'd recommend getting Odyssey so you dont miss out on certain features, and besides the DLC has mechanics that can speed up some progression as well
No reason not to get Odyssey really, if you're still at the purchase stage.

If you only wanted single player ship type stuff (Solo mode in Horizons) then you can still do that, it's tempting to say just play Legacy Horizons for that (it's a separate server that doesn't update with the Live version of the game, what you do in Legacy won't translate to the Live version servers) as it runs much better and doesn't have the problems that Odyssey and Colonisation brought. You can still play the Legacy whether you buy Odyssey or not, there aren't many players in Legacy so the likelihood of you meeting anyone there in Open is as near to zero as makes no odds, and you won't get ganked (killed by another player for no reason) unless you're extreeeeemely unlucky. Unfortunately, as most players now play Live, Legacy is a bit of a fleet carrier graveyard as I doubt anyone has been paying their upkeep on that server, IMO dead fleet carriers should all be removed from the Legacy version unless they're being maintained by their owners.

It doesn't speed up the progression in term of money outside the exobiology that gives a lot of cash compared to the base game.
Apart all of that, it is a great addition as a content by feet.

No. Get the Deluxe edition.
it adds many more settlements and missions.

i was against odyssey at the beginning, but now i dont play without it anymore.
even if you dont like fps scooter stuff, odyssey is much more than that

You're missing out on half the game if you don't have it ... that's about how it is

You mean I'm missing out on stuff because I bought Odyssey as a DLC, seeing as I already owned the base game? If so, how are existing game owners supposed to get those 'many more settlements and missions' that buying just the Odyssey DLC wouldn't provide (according to what you've written here)?

odysey is the future and legacy is just a dead end.
besides of that, it feel somehow "satstic" because you are ALWAYS bind on your pilot seat ever.
Yes Elite dangerous is a space ship game for me,
but sometimes it is good to stretch your legs on planet surfaces, stations or to scan crash sides or plants

Legacy runs much smoother for just about everything it does, I don't think there's really much of the core Elite experience missing there.

If there was a 100% offline version of Elite Dangerous I'd be playing it, I could easily not care about meeting other players (not that we do most of the time anyway, we just see the mess they leave behind).

You also get good money doing on ground conflict zones (high's)

"Progression" towards what? There's no story/mission arcs in ED... so there's no progression toward any particular "end". Goals are entirely player-driven. But as others have said, it is much faster to make money in Odyssey in Exo-bio, and costs nothing to do it as well. Which is far easier to get into than working into a better mining set up and equipping a ship to mine platinum, or a ship for pirate hunting etc. So if "progression" means working your way into bigger ships (eventually Fleet Carrier), then yes it'll help because you can make money faster once you get the hang of it.
