I've even cruised around it at 4,000c using SCO and it still makes me feel incredibly slow. And it still isn't even the biggest star you can visit.
It's pretty big... But it's only a supergiant.
After you've seen Betelgeuse, check out VY Canis Majoris. It's a hypergiant... https://i.imgur.com/wT0CRbD.png
No need just say it 3 times and it will appear ; )
I remember I was basically scooping fuel during orbital flight around that planet.
When it does grow to a blue giant I would not want to be in the system either. Especially when it does finally explode cause nothing near by ~5 light years will stay the same.
It would go almost all the way out to Jupiter's orbit, actually. It would swallow up the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, at least.
In Elite, if you land on Betelgeuse's second planet (the first one is inside fuel scooping range) it's still a massive ball of fire in the sky. If you land on one of Saturn's moon, which is only slightly further than Betelgeuse 2, our sun is barely distinguishable from background stars. It's mind-boggling to think about how big Betelgeuse is.
I could be mistaken, but I don't think it will go to a blue giant. I've never heard any astrophysicist say it would, anyway. I'm reasonably certain the fact that it's a red giant is because that's the final stages of its life-cycle. I suppose it's possible they've discovered new things since I last looked into it though. It's been at least 5 years since I last dove into that topic.
