If you fire up the Mining tutorial, does it register you firing the lasers? It's not very far into the tutorial.
they will mine in a 3km range so you wont need to get up close and personal with the rocks you mine.
they are also help full for those ships hard points are at the back of the ship.
and you can use them as weapons also.
Use this guide, since the tutorial is apparently borked.
Edit - A Mining Multi Limpet controller is superior to having two separate controllers!

Kind of dumb having to resort to YouTube to teach me how the game works. I figured out the mining lasers, but I'm stuck figuring out sub-surface and deep-core. They just bounce off.
I learned all about mining from that guide.
