Elite Dangerous

Question about colonization
if you build as tier 1 station, can you upgrade it to tier 2/3 later and if so will you have unlimited time to do the upgrade?

AFAIK, no. So choose wisely.

However, why not start off with an outpost, and once that is done, then you can take your time colonizing.

Say you build an outpost, can you switch to something bigger after or are you stuck for ever with your small outpost .... this probably has to do with the OP's question, I'm not getting tier stuff
If not, can you colonize another system if you already did once and go bigger this time?

You are stuck forever with your small outpost as far as I can see, but you can build many stations in a system. I think the system I started work on has slots for fourteen space stations and twenty something ground stations. There are different benefits to different stations so if you wanted to build up a system rather than just daisy-chaining out into the black, you're going to build a few outposts anyway. May as well start with an easy one to get the hang of things.

When you build a small it gives you 1 system building point.

You need 2-3 points to start a large station after that. You can get 2 more by building 2 small facilities of any kind.

The system I'm in allows for 31 space-based facilities so I can be busy here for the next 5 years, approximately.

I mean, yeah... but in Minecraft and Factorio, it's called gameplay. Should be the same in ED. Aren't we playing a game? And maybe having fun doing it?
