Some apps can do it automatically of course ; but this site and a few working brain cogs are enough to sort it all out, and find out how much to expect from what.
edit : missed the point sorry. Scanning new plants give a +4x bonus, so a 1 mil bacteria would yield 5k. But to do that you would need to go hundred, even thousand Ly away. If just starting out, scanning already known "good value" plants is a very fine way to earn early cash.
I did that and did it fast, I didn't spend time searching for the last rare plant on planets if it had like 8 different one and I had 6 or 7 I went to the next planet and raised my credits about 3 billions so yeah it works
If you're gathering money, get just the alien lifeforms. Or follow a guide if you just want the money and nothing else.

It's one of the ways people are using to get the money for a fleet carrier because you can make a lot, but it's very boring.
