New changes in the recent years are better farming rates for Engineering materials, where it's much easier to do, and Engineering itself is a little better in terms of how many materials you have to spend to engineer your modules.
Power Play 2.0 is out, which makes all PP modules available to every power, but each have different unlock orders. You also get PP merits just from doing normal things, like scanning a ship, combat, or trade. Also, your merit level doesn't decay, and you get little rewards each rank you get. The overhaul was to incentivize staying with a specific Power long-term and not just pledge, wait, get the module, then leave and repeat with another Power.
If you're in Maia, you probably just missed all the Thargoid activity, as they had invaded the bubble recently, and were repelled. There might be lesser Thargoid activity in your area.
I've just come back from a 3 year hiatus from the game, and I've been having fun. I prefer PvE bounty hunting combat, but I've been doing some trade and bouncing around systems. Sometimes I take a small ship out for a joy ride.
FDev has recently pumped money and attention into the game, as they realized people still play it, and care about it, hence the recent changes and upcoming new stuff.
Literally the best Han Solo simulator money can buy.
The ground missions can be fun and some are quite challenging. Adds a new dimension to the game.
The trick here, if you want, is to hover above the base until they arrive. When they land, drop dumbfire missiles on them.
If you like Elite, and you don't already own Odyssey... At it's new standard price of £10 it's a nobrainer. At the current sale price, of £6...? You would have to be an absolute moron of the highest magnitude to miss it.
That is... Unless you're stuck playing Legacy, because you're on an older PC that isn't up to the task of running the Live client. Then there's no point.
Not that into new ships as I like my Asp, as I did in Frontier Elite II as well. Tried a few others but the Asp was always the best as it looked like the Millenium Falcon a bit. I do like the idea of seeing my ship from the outside though.
Are the external cameras any easier to use?
And what happens when you die on foot? Do you have insurance same as your ship?
It's the only thing in gaming I've ever pre-ordered.
Oddy is in better shape than it was, but it is also abandoned for some time.
It's biggest drawback is it takes away the imagination and makes the world feel like nothing but repetitive NPC's.
It's strength is in multiplayer and carrier usage, kinda nice to be able to teleport our presence into eachother's ships. Pity we can't walk in them.
The carrier is probably nicest space in Odyssey.
Stations don't feel like a space for pilots or CMDR's, they feel like spaces for passengers.
And who lets these "you wanna buy some deathsticks" types into the pilot's bar?
Whoever made these spaces seems to have never experienced the private pilot's life.
Hi I also have not played for years.
Would you recommend coming back?
I have billion in credits, most ships all engineered and upgraded to the max
How is powerplay 2.0? As I really did not enjoy the previous version when I lost my ranks etc.
Is the game just better overall?
Also how are the planet side walk around missions? I remember them being janky and buggy. ( like find the pirate captain in a building etc )
When they added Powerplay 2 they also added a fair bit of powerplay content to settlements. Apart from specific data and loot, they also gave all enemy powerplay troops their own distinctive uniforms.
When they added Spire sites it was some of the best on-foot content in the game. Jumping platform to platform 5k above the ground to overload the growths and steal the compound so it could be poisoned by Ram Tah ... definitely new.
Yes, I would suggest coming back. As I mentioned in my post, the biggest change is the drop rate of engineering materials. There are places where you can fill up in 1-2 sessions on one type of engineering material, then you can trade down at your leisure as needed. Also engineering itself is better, and less random. If you're already engineered, then this isn't really relevant, but there are new ships, so it'll be applicable to engineering the new ships.
If you haven't heard, there are currently 4 new ships. They are released individually, and originally for ARX, but after 3-4 months, they can be bought for credits. Currently 2 of the new ships have been out long enough to be bought with credits, the Type-8 and the Python MkII. The other two (Mandalay and Cobra MkV) are recent enough they are still only available with ARX, though the Mandalay should be going to credits in a month or so. Personally, I'm waiting for the last 2 ships, but I don't mind buying ARX for them.
As for your question about Powerplay 2.0, I can't compare it with 1.0, as I never did 1.0. But you don't lose ranks in 2.0, and you'll have to start from scratch since the transition to 2.0. However, many activities that are just normal gain you merits, not a large amount, just some. You'll get merits scanning ships, doing combat, and trade. You'll have weekly missions to accomplish to net more merits. You'll slowly and steadily gain merits and ranks, but the more you do, the faster you'll gain ranks to unlock the modules.
As stated before, all factions get access to all of the PP 1.0 modules, but the unlock order is different. Example: I'm pledged to Arissa Lavigny-Duval, and I get the Imperial Hammer railgun unlocked first, as that was what she offered under 1.0, but as I go up the ranks, I'll get Prismatic Shields, and Packhound Missiles, which were offered by others under 1.0. The rank to unlock the first module is like Rank 34, and I'm only Rank 10 right now, but some people can get a ton of merits in a week, so it really depends.
I don't do much ground missions. I'll get out and walk around, but I don't really do those much. I have heard the state of the game is much better than before and less buggy.
If that's not enough, we're in a post-Thargoid invasion state of the bubble. The Thargoids invaded with 8 titans, and the last one made a beeline for Sol, and was there for a week or so before it was destroyed right before Christmas. As nice as it was to see a unified humanity vs the Thargoids, I kinda missed the political BS of the 3 states. I'm sure that's just a matter of time though.
And with that a new feature is coming in 2025 which is Colonization. It'll allow players to do new stuff like setup a colony within 10 ly of the bubble, and once that's established, I think it'll expand another 10 ly, and so forth.
PP2 is completely different. You never lose ranks, and it gives you a reason to do a lot of existing content if you choose to.
The weekly missions are fun.
