Illegal Goods
So I did my first mission, finally got the courage to fly my ship to a different system and land on a new planet and I picked up some illegal goods.

I was notified that I'm now a criminal if I'm scanned, but thankfully their were no law enforcement there.

Nevetheless, I still had to deliver the goods, so I returned back to my original base and I was told that my ship is being scanned as I approached my designated landing pad. I kept the illegal stuff in my coat pocket and not in my ship's storage. I don't think I was caught, so I smuggled the items in flawlessly.

HOWEVER! I might have been lucky, so I'm wondering are their any cloaking devices that can prevent scanners from picking up on illegal goods? If not, is it all up to chance? Are there any way of avoiding scanners, both with the ship or on foot? And what happens besides having to pay a fine?

Use a heat sink the moment you are told you are getting scanned. Stops them being able to scan you

My ship said 1/2 or something if I remember correctly. No idea how to use it, I did go into Silent Mode, but then after a minute or two my ship started to overreact and throw a tantrum so I figured it's best I turn that off before I self-destruct.

Does this have something to do with a heat sink?

Edit: I just started yesterday btw.

Yes, when you go silent running it turns off your shields and closes all the heat vents.

You need to fire off heatsinks now and then to keep the temperature frosty.

If you are on foot, make sure that your security does not enter the innermost circle of the sensor. At the very least, do not stand within 90 degrees of the front of the direction they are facing (arrow).
Note that if you see a scanning warning in red text, they have already found you and will shoot you if you run away.
(They may find you at the moment you jump in low gravity, but this is an accident. To avoid accidents, it is recommended to jump and walk over the object. Security will not try to scan you by jumping.)

I will check keybinds to find out how to shoot a heatsink. I am guessing I need to repurchase these when I run out?

I figured that bit with the circle, not so much with the arrow. So far I've not got caught, but I am scanned like every 2 minutes. I'll play around with these NPCs and their vision before I go raiding their homes. Thanks!

It's under Flight Controls> Cooling (if memory serves).

You can either buy replacements when you re-arm at a station, or you can synthesise your own if you have the necessary materials.

Much appreciated :)

When you are headed to the station in super cruise, you can see the orientation of the station relative to you and curve around so that you are more or less pointed at the slot before you leave super cruise. This will reduce the time to get to the slot a bit, thus reducing the amount of time you need to stealth.

Nice, I'll pay attention to that.

I've encountered another problem, not sure if it's just a bug or not. I have some illegal goods and I have found two different places with a black market, however the buy/sell tabs are both empty. I can't buy nor sell things there and the Black Market shows up under Contacts' with a person's name, so I read that if it were disabled, that would be greyed out or not show up at all. Do I need to complete something prior to using the Black Market?

Could be temporarily unavailable because of system state, faction, or power. Relevant discussion here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/359320/discussions/0/276237094324803362/

Or it could be that you are confusing illegal Odyssey items and illegal items in the main game, they are treated completely differently. Did you get the illegal items on foot, or in space?

Odyssey (on foot):
Forbidden goods, assets, and data stored in your ship's STORAGE, no need to worry about these items if your ship gets scanned. They can only become an issue if you have them in your backpack and you get scanned and/or arrested. Basically once you get back to your ship they automatically go into storage and you can forget about them until you get to an anarchy station and sell them.

Illegal on foot odyssey items are sold at a bartender in an anarchy station.

Main Game:
Cargo you pick up in your ship is listed in the ship's INVENTORY menu. Stolen and otherwise prohibited goods stored here will show up on a ship scan.

Illicit and stolen ship cargo can be sold at the station black market, if it is open. You can also jettison these items from your inventory menu if you feel they are not worth the trouble/risk.

Edit: clarification
Edit 2: Selling for each category

That makes perfect sense now.
Yea, I picked them on foot and I was warned that being scanned would be a problem so I assumed that will be an issue when landing my ship at bases, but I've been scanned and nothing crept up. So I'll try to sell them at an Anarchy system next time. Thank you!
