1) Not every space game has space legs
2) X3 got space legs as part of a DLC IIRC. X4 has space legs, not planet legs.
3) Some stuff has to come via DLC these days or through some sort of funding. FD made the base game without, added atmosphereless planetary landings with a DLC (now folded into the base game), and light atmosphere planetary landings with space legs with another DLC. Maybe in 5 years or so they will roll Odyssey into the base game like they did with Horizons. Not all companies do this, keeping their DLCs separate forever.
I get some developers don’t do this feature, but it’s really crappy to add it behind a dlc, especially considering I could have bought the game deluxe edition for just 3 bucks more, but now I have to pay double to get it because owning the game doesn’t make the deluxe edition upgrade any cheaper. It’s a ♥♥♥♥ move and I wish I had realized outside of my excitement for it. Now the excitement is gone and I haven’t even played the game but like 3 hours.
Horizons was merged with the base game just before Odyssey DLC launched.
Either way, if that's ruined the experience for you, it's not the game's fault. If anything, you would have seen on the game store that Odyssey is not part of the base game and also that it's on sale right now. You could have picked it up for a few dollars, and still could.
Then get the DLC.
You might be hoping too much from it though. I think if you asked most players, they rarely do the on-foot stuff, except perhaps exobiology for some easy cash.
Not so much for anyone doing Powerplay 2.0. One of the best merit earners (and most fun) is raiding settlements and stealing power data/items and/or doing power restoration missions AND stealing power data/items.
I've just hit level 52 with my power, no grinding, mostly on-foot gameplay.
Yes, PP2 has shifted the dynamic, but you have to ask why they are doing it.
Grinding out merits for levels or to help their power would be the usual answer. Doing it for fun... i guess not so many.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy most of the ground based missions/mechanics, but given the choice, i prefer to spend time in my spaceship, exploring, pew-pewing, or whatever. ED is primarily a game about spaceships for many i think.
Maybe I'm biased - my gameplay divides up into about 70% solo (good mix of ship and on foot) and 30% multiplayer (always on foot, except thargoid combat).
I do enjoy pretty much everything the game has to offer, though. And I still like raiding settlements and eliminating everyone one by one without getting seen.
I have zero experience with online gaming outside of call of duty though. I always wanted to get into it, but so many people online are so toxic. Even with cod on console my friends list was quiet small
Well, you have the option of playing in solo and private groups if you want to avoid toxic people altogether. That being said, outside of certain more popular systems, even if you play in open, you'll rarely see other players. There are gankers in Elite, but they tend to lurk in high traffic systems and can be easily avoided by switching to a private mode before jumping there.
As for the on-foot content that comes with Odyssey... personally, I like it a lot. I have a lot of fun with on-foot CZs when I'm in the mood. I don't really care for FPS games anymore, but I enjoy Elite's combat zones. Exobiology gives me a reason to drive around on planetary surfaces, and in the process I end up seeing some amazing sights.
One thing that no other game but Elite can give you is the scale of the universe. The galaxy is just so massive that a human mind just cannot comprehend it. Elite has a way of making you realize just how insignificant we are, and a big draw for me has always been the simulation of the vastness of space itself.
