Keep in mind the base cost of ANY ship is just that: entry level ownership. To make any of your ships worth flying, plan on spending at least five times the base cost in upgrades.
Happy flying, CMNDR
The difference between buy and resell the ship isn't so big, but you'll make money faster than in a sidewinder. Big cargo space means more goods and better trading mission's rewards.
It sounds like he can't get a Viper. Also it takes 3 million credits to outfit one. A good one at least. So he'll have to go down the Cobra line first.
I thought an Adder would be a nice step up from sidewinder. Looked at an Adder on a station: 87k for ship, 4.4k insurance, 16k for pulse lasers, 18k for gimbled canon, 13k for shield gen, 13k for kill warrant = ~151k. I realize this is pretty basic equipment.
I've been mostly doing missions/trading with my sidewinder & now have 156,000 credits. I was aiming for 200k before I'd buy the Adder. So would my loadout above just get me killed if I tried to trade and bounty hunt with an Adder?
P.S. I did this loadout (above) with a sidewinder. Did pretty well until I got cocky and had my a$$ handed to me. :)
It's not great in a fight, though, but it can sting an unwary foe and run away reasonably well from those who would hunt you. The worst part of the Adder is the window.
With a few Adder trade runs, you'll be up to a Cobra fairly quickly. People like the bigger, gunnier ships but nothing outruns a Cobra, making it a cherry smuggler. At that point, you don't even need guns anymore.

1st guy was an Eagle. He dropped my shields to 35% but I got him down to 19% and he retired from the fight. I headed for the station again. Then,
2nd guy had a Diamond Back! Holy crap! But actually seemed to be able to turn better than him and got behind him several times. After about a 5 min. fur ball, the local authorities showed up and we polished him off. I got a 13,300 bounty! And I completed my delivery! Cost me 780 credits to fix the sidewinder.
Why am I braggin' on this? (I'm not, really...I thought I was toast in the first interdiction. and I just got lucky in the 2nd!) But it relates to my buying an Adder (above). I think I could do even better with that ship. Anyway, I'm up to 230K credits, so I'm gonna buy one tomorrow and keep improving it as I get more credits. Then I'll get a Cobra.
Thanks for your input about Adders, pros & cons y'all.
I went Sidewinder -> Eagle -> Viper -> Vulture...
