Still a little confused on how selling data/exploration work.
I mostly play solo but i know its connected and all so my question is when it gives me the option to sell data is that data that nobody else has or what becasuse i mostly hang around where i started so i would think everything has been explored around there. So if anybody could clear that up it would be mush appreciated.

Well if you're near the starting systems (pretty much every habitated star haha), it is already discovered by someone already. But you and your ship computer does not have the data about that star/system, so when you jump and see "unknown" you scan it and it is added to your ship's computer.
Once you land at a station, at least 20Ly from the place(s) you scanned, you can sell that data for an amount of credits.

If, you travel really far (like millions of Ly) and end up at a system no one have discovered yet, when you scan it and sell it later somewhere, your name will be listed at the system as "Discovered by: *your CMDR name here*", and usually you gain a large amount of credits for it.

Exploring only gives good amount of credits if you really go places far, far, really far from this side of the galaxy, then come back with the data.

If you're starting the game now, is more advised, profitable and efficient to try trading or combat, be it bounty hunting, RES farming, Conflict Zones Bonds or missions at the stations Bulletin Boards.

Good luck CMDR. =]

You can sell data that others have already scanned. This is so new explorers don't have to travel far to find new bodies to scan. Otherwise within a year or two new explorers would have to travel long distances to start getting results.

However, if you are the first to discover an object you get a 50% bonus on the payout.

The lore reason for allowing people to submit scanned data on already scanned systems is that its fresh information. UC like to confirm previous data and check for any changes in the data.

Don't forget a fuel scoop and heat sinks.

And an AMFU.... never needed heat sinks or an AMFU myself.. but there could always be a first time.

Been wondering about exploration. Thanks folks, helpful info. I have an Asp outfit as an armed trader. All A or D gear, and enough Credits to change to a long distance explorer.

Any advice which way to go to try long distance exploration? My Asp can jump around 30Ly unladen, so I figure dropping the cargo racks and adding the two scanners (I exchanged my BDS for a docking computer) plus fuel scoop and extra fuel tanks, will still give me a close to that.

I have been doing Lave--->Diso->Fujin--->Altair (10 stations) rare loop, but want a change from the grind. Have 30+ million towards my Python/FDL (not sure which one I want) and just want a break from trading.

Commanders with exploration experience please share your advice. AR

Second star from the left and straight on until morning.

Seriously, don't obsess about particular destinations. All the major tourist locations have been visited a million times over. Lots of interesting stuff to be found in random directions.

Just a few key things.

Watch out for dark regions or areas between the arms. They have less scoopable stars. Check your route frequently to make sure you always have enough fuel. Use your map filter to check for scoopable stars. OBAFGKM are the scoopable ones.

An AMFU and heat sink can be useful if you run into a contact binary or make a mistake.

If you take serious damage, head home.

If you die, you lose all exploration data.

F type stars have the greatest chance of finidng earthlikes and water worlds. Always worth dropping into a F star system if you are passing.

See if you can find a Herbig AE/BE... those things spin like crazy.

Thanks Aunty. lol. I didn't think about an AMFU. But it is good advice, as is heat sink. I have had a few instances of dropping out so close to a purple start with a huge "Too Close Ring", that I was dropped out of Super Cruise and got fried a bit.

I found it strange that after moving away, my ship would not cool down below 50+ internal heat. A heat sink would be very handy in those situations. AR

Heres my Asp loadout. If and when I need to repair I can drop out of Super Cruise and turn off my Thrusters and power the Auto Field-Maintenace Units. Other than that you can power everything.

You can do what I did. I made a test run. Came back and refitted. Then wen't out on the long haul.

Did it in my Conda. But as soon as I got back I bought an Asp. Much better turning in Super Cruise.

I find shields pointless and dead weight. When you get back you will be so far on the edge of Civ space that interdictions won't be an issue before you sell your data. Unless you plan sale at a major hub. Which I wouldn't do unless it was a Community Event.

I Bull Horned (Discovery Scanner) every system but skipped scanning object's untill I was around 600Ly out. If I was fuel scooping I would scan the sun too.

After that everything was first discoverd by me and fully scanned.

Don't scan Rock Belts around suns. You get no money for them.

Ice planets and small moons don't make much either.

Also don't get hung up on scanning every First Discovered system. I'd play claim by scanning the Sun but I'd skip it if nothing great was to be found. You will go through 5 dozen systems before you find one like this...

If your looking to make pretty darn good money head to the Core and scan every Neutron Star. Though I made 8 million just doing a 20k Ly trip to a couple Nebulas..

Good to know about rock belts. Thought about shields, was undecided but leaning towards dropping them for an extra fuel tank. AR

Thats a great screen shot. 12 ringed planets. Wow. AR

Ah yes, it's written on the plaque for the Enterprise D, right?

Sorry for going off-topic, by the way. Bad habit of mine :P
Agony_Aunt Jun 20, 2015 @ 10:45pm
Nah, Picard says it at the end of the first episode IIRC.

And off-topic? That's my speciality!
