Awesome. Do I need to buy any special modules to do this, or is this feature standard, with every ship?
Picking up items in space can be an adventure, especially in bigger ships.
Approach very slowly, the slower the better. If you go too fast, you'll hit the container with enough force to rupture it. If it ruptures, you don't get the item. Keep the item dead-center in your Scooping crosshair, and slow down as you get close to it.
Be particularly careful collecting Biowaste, Explosives and Mineral Oil. You really don't want to rupture any of those cans.
Thanks. How do I find items to pick up floating about?
Ships under attack and on the losing side will normally drop some cargo before they're destroyed.
Also if you're a pirate, you can ask the ships to drop cargo or else you will destroy them. This is a quite common practice in open play (PvP).
Remember that any cargo you scoop up will be marked as stolen, so you will have to sell it on the black markets.
I highly recommend you read the manual before you play again, mainly because it'll save you 100 more questions and possibly save you a lot of frustration.

Thanks!
Didn't know that they had a paper (PDF) manual! Watched the introductory video series from Frontier but that wasn't enough.
The manuals for most Steam games (including this one) is always available from the store page whether you have bought the game or not.
There is a link called 'View the manual' on the right side.
