Random NPC direct chat
Hi all I have been playing Elite: Dangerous for just a few days now and every now and then as I am approaching my destionation an npc says "Good job i've found you, you're a hard one to track down" then "Follow my wake and we can talk"...

Does anyone know what that means to me and what I need to do if anything?

Thanks.

When that happens to me, I typically see them drop out of supercruise and leave a low-energy wake, which you can target and drop out at. The few times i've done it, they usually just make an offer to adjust one of your missions. If they leave a high energy wake, they jumped to a different system.

Same. I wouldn't mess with that. It's just a group of ships flying together. Like many things, it's completely pointless.

Sometimes it's a pirate NPC making themselves known to you. Aka heading to intradict you.
IT depends on what they say. :)

Its not so random, there are missions to kill various types of targets, the text is a giveaway.

For example last night I got a mission to kill a Preacher...

Dude was talking about religion in the local comms....

It helps you identify them

Is anyone else annoyed that the new ship offers way less?

Perhaps not as pointless as you think. I once had an Assassination mission: jumped in system, discovered my target was flying Orca upon jumping into USS. He got away from me that first time when his numerous fighter-flyin' bodyguards engaged me. Later I discovered him trying to "hide in plain sight" by joining the Wedding Flotilla.

Needless to say, the Wedding party REALLY got started when I opened up on my target.

These are helpful if you want to negatively influence a faction. You can accept one or more of their missions at a bulletin board and then wait for one of these and accept the alternate mission.

Anytime I've accepted their offer, they've paid me much less than I would have received for completing the original mission. I just ignore them now.
