Composition Scanner, ship/SRV vs. on foot

When scanning bio on planetary bodies, I noticed you can scan on foot and then scan again in your ship/SRV. What is that all about?

Can we just use the ship scanner and never even bother to exit?

I guess the real question is if the COMP is a legacy from before Odyssey?

Its a different type of scan from the SRV and results in very low payouts. Its not exactly a legacy, it was a feature from earlier that they added the ability to do to new lifeforms for Odyssey.

Ah, didn't even notice the payout for a comp scan. I'm in it for the women not the doe :)

Comp scan is the one that's meant to update the Codex with your personal discoveries.
