Deep Space Sounds
There's no sound in space, yes yes I know.
This isn't about that.

So when you're very far from the bubble, no ports, settlements, nothing, why do I still hear these loud bangs? I thought these were other ships entering super/hyper-cruise or entering the atmosphere of a nearby planet. However, so far out, shouldn't it just be us alone and the noise of the internals of our ship?

Or is this bang something else? I'm pretty sure most of you have heard it when you cruise from one planet to the other.

If this is meant to be noise from other ships, it would be cool if systems with no human activity would be void of such sounds. Or is this nitpicking, cause I don't want that, I really do enjoy this game, except I'm just cruising and I always check my radar and the system, thinking "oh! I'm not alone" only to realize that I am, at least as far as I know.... O.o

What loud bang are you talking about? Your ship does make some noises when you're flying around, but I don't normally hear loud bangs when in Supercruise.

Other ships do make some sounds in SC, but it's not a bang. It's more of a high pitch sound that is hard to describe (sounds like trickling water run through a filter). That's typically when you're around the star and they're jumping into the system.

Even when you're flying around in conventional flight, other ships entering or exiting supercruise don't make a loud bang. It's more of a swish sound.

I try actively not to hear the noise you're talking about. I just keep thinking "That engine is really knocking! Need to add some oil!" but, unfortunately there is no oil to be had.

All jokes aside, I think it's something to do with our FSDs because afaik that sound doesn't happen in slowspace.

Yea I know that high pitch sound, when you go close to them, but listen again and you'll hear occasional bangs. It's in every system so not one specific one, or at least I can't recall a system that is quiet.

I'll pay attention and see, but then you know what I mean.
If it's our ship, ok.
However, it does sound like others. :lunar2019grinningpig:
No idea what you mean OP. A loud bang is something that would be noticed by many.

Be that as it may i am out exploring tomorrow. If you record it, it is easy to compare.

Once you hear it you won't be able to un-hear it. I'll let Dave post audio if he wants.

Might be mistaken, but I don't think it's quite a "banging" sound they're referring to, more something that sounds like rumbling thunder.

Sure I'll record it in a bit and then post it as soon as possible.

If you beat me to it, that fines.

I just clipped a video, I'll be uploading it shorty.

Here's the clip. Still uploading so it might not open yet, and quality will be poor while YT re-encodes it, but it shouldn't matter since it's just noise we need.

Oh, that's just the normal sound your FSD makes. Think of it as the sound of folding space. Alternatively, it's your ship rattling since it's essentially surfing a wave (the FSD folds space to push you forward).

EDIT: You can also hear similar sounds when you're jumping to another system. It's one of the reasons that they call it Witchspace, and why stories exist of explorers getting space madness and hearing whispers while jumping.

Probably not now, but don't fret-- you'll get your turn sooner or later.

Indeed just the FSD folding space making a rumbling.

Hearing things is when you know you need to go back to populated space.

Or take a nap.

Just refuel your ship before you leave it on a rock for a few days.

That sucker still uses fuel to ... something about underpants?

Space is not empty, as we all know. There are stones that have been kicked out of rings and so on. The ship is a resonating body. We are traveling at high speed. A stone crashes against the shields. These are slightly compressed. These vibrations are transferred to the hull of the ship. This in turn causes the air in the ship to vibrate. We can hear these vibrations.
The drive and the modules also make vibrations (vibrations in the air = sounds).

Life support and systems in standby still draw energy while parked
