1. MKB
2. Console Controllers
3. HOTAS
4. HOSAS
This is definitely not a game that can be enjoyed fully on a MKB, I can't ever imagine playing any driving game with a MKB let alone flying.
No, you'll have to manually add a new roll.
I've a long-standing theory that the controls are un-intuitive in order to force people to change them. XD
Setting up controls in elite is a rite of passage fer sure.
You can find layouts and/or print your own here:
https://edrefcard.info
The manual also has most keybinds listed, you can find an updated version here:

cheers
Then you must have gotten used to it.
I remember playing Need For Speed on a Keyboard, but then I played Burnout on a controller, so when I had to play NFS on a keyboard again, it just never again felt the same. So I got myself a controller and now that's what I use even for Elite, not the best option, but if I get a HOSAS, I want to actually build around it, like a moving cockpit and stuff.
But then good luck with the mouse controls, you can pretty much change everything, it's more about convenience. There is a button that can switch you from two sort of flight settings, one being your standard and the other being your alternative. Perhaps this feature can help you and you can switch when you need to?
After playing a bit, you will notice that the flight model is designed so ships feel like flying airplanes, with roll > pitch > yaw in terms of rotation speed, so I understand why they thought of choosing this default scheme, but I don't like it either. iirc, Ace Combat 7 has exactly the same kbm mapping for forward throttle/pitch/roll/yaw.
just the rolling was such a disorientating experience, i feared it's going to get much more confusing with the control preset. i'm also not sure about all settings meanings but i think it will be managable.
also a thing is that lots of guides are usually several years old and i'm never sure if going through them will still be relevant today, but i guess this 2015/2021 one is still up to date?
I find this the best for playing with M+KB when I am working away. I got HOTAS for at home :)
I used this before i even started up the Sidey.
I agree about controls being all over the place.
Still remember the dream X3 Reunion was to fly. ED is ... not that but it's good once you get your controls under control.
Don't even think about combat before you get used to your ship.
Fly, land on planets, learn to use the scanners and fire groups. Learn to RUN AWAY because combat requires an investemnt in equipment and knowledge of how to use it.
Once you do get an itch to fight something, go through the combat tutorials. They're good, and they're a consequence free test bed for your controls.
Practise staying on an opponents six for 5 minutes without even firing. Just learn how to do that before you venture out into bounty hunting or piracy. My 2c anyway
edit - oh, ffs bind Boost / Supercruise Overcharge to a button you will NOT hit by mistake. And make sure nothing else binds to that.
I use Backspace because it is out of the way of everything but that may not be to everyone's taste.
Btw, in your cockpit, right side menu (Internal Panel) - default key {4}
CODEX and pilots handbook describes a lot of things in the game.
There are also training scenarios; some of those are outdated.
You can even have quite a few of the codex entries read aloud while playing.
Media player is on the last page of the same panel. (click entry in codex - add to playlist)
Media player controls on first page too on the bottom.
I highly recommend exploring the interface in elite; click menus and read the descriptions.
Cargo and materials in the inventory can also be clicked for more information.
Same goes for the Navigation menu on your left side in the cockpit.
Details are available in a lot of places ingame.
Shortcut primer:
1 = External menu
2 = Comms menu
3 = Role menu
4 = Internal menu
Two things: find and unbind the "Eject all Cargo" keybind, or set it to something obscure.
"Target next system in route" is the most important keybind in the game, learn it well.
cheers
you forgot Stick and keyboard its almost the same as a hotas might even be better since you can use your left hand to do thrusters with WASD.
You're right, I guess you can combine them.
For Star Wars Battlefront I flew with a controller, but did the FPS bit with MKB 😂
