Correct. I confused groups and triggers, as did OP I believe.
You'll still need to use fire groups for your weapons, limpets, and most of the scanners. Most of the countermeasure options can have their own keys or key combos though. So you don't need your chaff, heatsinks, shield cells etc in a firegroup.
It's less stressful as an ED player.

I always assumed the console peasants were to blame, being restricted by their lamepads. Now that they've been purged, we should have our 3+ triggers
Alas, the game is designed to use gamepads on PC as well. There are control schemes for them.
they can use the same Joysticks and throttles we do, i don't feel that's a veiled excuse anymore
They can't use dual sticks with pedals and a throttle, paired with voice attack, head tracking, and software allowing us to go past 32 buttons per device. Being able to plug in a joystick doesn't compare.
