Are ship interiors still absent?
This is the single most important thing I want from the game to compel me to return. Walking around starbase concourses was nice, getting in a rover was nice, but the ground-based shooting was completely pointless. There are dozens of games, such as Call of Duty and Borderlands, that do that with more content, better graphics, and less lag.

Because so much of the game is set on a ship, I want the ability to walk around that ship, like in X4. It would be the only immersion I need.

Ship interiors are not in game, or planned to be (as far as we know).

Most players don't want them in game, we're already sick of walking across docking bays.

Then you are not going to be compelled - FDevs said that they are not going to work on it. There are other games you can play that have it.

How is shooting pointless, but walking about a ship for no reason, isn't?

As I said, the shooting mechanics are a pale imitation of more polished games like Call of Duty or Doom. By comparison, very few games have detailed ship interiors, and none have the same presentation and realism of Elite. Except Star Citizen, but that game is far too expensive.

But what would you do inside the ship?

Shooting results depend on many things, including your tactics. Different ways bring different outcomes. That's the gameplay.

Walking through the same interior will be no different when you do it for the first time, or for the hundredth. There is no gameplay value in it.

That's why shooting is not pointless and walking through ship interiors is.

Okay then, I give up; I'm clearly not going to find a sympathetic audience. Back to Everspace then, which doesn't have ship interiors either, but does have a more core combat-focused experience and a more sensible level of grind. Or Starsector, which lets me control a whole fleet and runs on integrated graphics.

Wrong comparison. Most ED missions involve stealth, not Rambo style shooters.

Only the conflict zones are designed for combat, and that's about 5% of the Odyssey gameplay.

Carriers are ships, therefore ship interiors are already in the game. XD

Yep, and everybody already can enjoy running through them, even if they don't own one.

Ship interiors went to the shop for a pack of cigs and never returned home.

I'd like ship interiors, like being able to at least board your ship and walk around while it's in the docking bay.

There are probably technical limitations for being able to get up out of your chair and walk around while in space. Like, you'd have to be able to do that while even in combat with a bunch of stuff going on too.

The optimization is bad enough now with the live build, having all that too would just compound it more.

Gameplay wise I think they should try to include hybrid mission types that require the player to go from space to onfoot. Like, expand the existing missions and add new ones.

Imagine being in the middle of a space battle and you accidentally press that 'get out of the chair' key, or the cat jumps up and lays down on your keyboard which has the same effect.

Generally, I think it would be a neat little Easter egg type of thing (a bit like the original Elite cheat code to play the docking music), but in a single seater fighter where are you going to go? To the airlock door and back? Would need to have a lot more added to the game to make it worth while, such as different stations that aren't available from the pilot's seat (maybe advanced or more detailed versions of the current pilot seat facilities, making having additional crew, either AI or human, more worth while). So while all of this would be great, I just haven't seen any indications that FDev have the interest in adding those sort of things to the game, and without them I think ship interiors would be nothing more than a pointless gimmick.

Make getting out of your chair require you to hold a button down for a few seconds?

Fair point, like the take-off thing.

Accidentally bailing out of your tank / jet have been a problem in the Battlefield games since time immemorial. They manage. I just rebind my eject key to something far across the keyboard like 'P'.
