However in the last year or so it's rather apparent that "life support" is no longer a fair speculative comment to make for Elite. I am saying this as someone who still believes that at the time, that was a fair way to describe things.
A significant change in direction, yes, and not all for the best IMO, but certainly no "maintenance mode" (New content is pretty much a disqualifying factor alone here)
I guess you mean the capital ships.
About time FD added an Alliance one. Fed and Imps got theirs at launch, and here we are, 10 years later, and the Alliance still don't have one.
For shame!
Meanwhile the two superpowers have massive, unified military forces that includes the capacity to build massive warships.
It's why the US Navy has 11 nuclear carriers, whilst the EU has 1 in total, and that falls under the service of France first, EU second, anyway.
To be honest, it's quite believable military structure to see that the Alliance lacks such vessels, taking into consideration the type of politics at play.

Could it?
It doesn't even have landing pads designed for player use.
Things are easy to make and propose when you're not the one making them.
Note that you can strip out all weapons and optional components and use a 3A EP drive on the Cobra V. But just barely-- you can't even afford the mass to tune it and thus it does worse than non-engineered 4A drive, much less one at G5 dirty+drag.
PS: Do you have a link to a Imp Courier build you'd recommend for combat?
I played around a bit, but the builds I was looking at seemed to be running pretty hot. Regardless, I don't want to judge this or any other ship only by the numbers in a ship builder website-- I'd rather put one together and fly it in-game.
We have Small, Medium, and Large. We could get "Huge" or "capital" class ships. They could have one landing pad for a single ship and be the step between a large and a Fleet Carrier.
It could be designed with Ship interiors in mind, so they could be the happy balance for the players who want ship interiors without having to go back and retool the game engine and all the old ships for interiors as well. I think that would be super cool.
It's the only way I see them being able to keep adding ships without disrupting the tedious balance between all the ship sizes that are already in the game presently. Otherwise, if they keep adding new ships, eventually they get to a point where it'll be the same as another ship but just look different.. Like all the same stats as a Krait Mk2 for example but from another manufacturer that looks different.
That would be "balanced" but kind of boring.
If they ever live up to their promise of ship interiors, they'll start with a popular Small, maaaaybe Medium, to curb the development time.
That ship has already sailed.
You can't hitch rides on FCs or in MC? Not being a jerk, haven't touched spaceFPSlegs.
You can see part of the interior by looking through the window, you can see the corridors are made. Meanwhile others ships have windows you can't see through. Besides the cockpit obviously.
The issue never was the difficulty to model it. But always in the way ED do instancing.
