I bought the AX Krait Mk 2 and have been doing Titan bombing runs. I was planning on kitting out my existing Krait Mk 2 to do it, but, $20 wasn't that big a deal for a dedicated, 20k rebuy ship to learn anti-Xenos stuff. (It costs about 1k to rebuy and about 16k to restock.)
If $20 isn't a big deal, I recommend it. Just remember to re-engineer that beam laser from Efficient/Thermal Vent to Long-Range/Thermal Vent.
If you buy the ship with ARX, there is no hull rebuy, just 5% of modules. So the ARX ship is a lower rebuy.
It's a shortcut past doing a bunch of other things in game to do something the new player might want to do right now.
If a new player wants to join their friends in AX combat right away, this is the way to do it.
Before prebuilts, and before the engineering buffs, I once spent three sessions helping another cmdr build an AX ship with visits to the shards sites, guardian ruins, unlocking engineers, etc. It was a fun time, and I enjoyed it, but I would not want to do that for every other person I've introduced to AX since then. They can muddle along solo, watch videos, or pay 20 bucks for a ship that will do the job immediately.
Tell that to a player who just wants to join their friends and shoot pirates, or thargoids, and only has a couple of hours a night to play.
I have all the time I want to play ED, but for others time is more precious than money.
1. sell a game with enormous amount of grind
2. wait till the player realizes how much grind he needs
3. sell the kit to shortcut the grind
4. PROFIT!
seems like a rip-off to me.
The prebuilts have no, or almost no, engineering. I think one of them has grade 3 thrusters or power supply.
What grind are you talking about? If you mean credits, any new player with a friend in game can have 100 million credits in minutes.
You really need to see the prebuilts as a ship kit and a paint job or two with a fairly average ship thrown in.
You say grind, I say content. Sounds like I'm the one of the two of us who will enjoy the game.
For what it's worth I think your favorite game is a grindy mess, also your favorite band sucks.
Once you feel like you have a firm grasp on all that then go ahead and buy a pre built if you have the disposable income. They are not amazing ships but they do start you off in the right direction.
Krait 2 is an all around ship like the Python. It can do everything good but nothing great.
If combat is your main goal stick to the FDL/Mamba as the corvette and cutter make combat too easy.
My personal advice to get to know the game would be to do some trade runs, especially the rares route. It will teach you how to look at the commodities menus and see profit vs expense and distance needed to make a profit.
Then try some mining to get the feel for limpets and scanning training.
Once you're comfortable with that start going for the larger ships to make all your tasks easier or more profitable.
If you just jump into the game with a mid size ship you wont lose money on rebuy unless you swap out internals or weapons but you will be frustrated at the amount of times you fail.
This game is one of the few games where it pays to crawl walk run. Don't skip the steps and enjoy the ride. Patience is a virtue gifted the elite players who stick around.
I'm glad I went with the latter.
