This was amazing, thank you :D
It makes sense actually. You can only scoop from stars that have hydrogen in them (or in their corona). You ship uses hydrogen as fuel.
Red/brown dwarfes have burned all their hydrogen.
Calm down. People don't know whether you're a noob or not. Noobs make hundreds of stupid mistakes all the time and then cry "bug" when it's their own ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Not only that, but there wasn't really much information included in the first post.
Why it would be off: Jumping only a station away and not wanting to have it affect fuel consumption for the 150k distance. OR you just upgraded the ship and didn't pay attention to power draw and while in Super Cruise, you lack the power to actually use the fuel scoop.
Remember that when you call into tech support and say something isn't working and don't go into detail how they ask if it's plugged in? That's due to not including all possible information at the start. The problem could always be that minor detail you didn't think to check. But no, it could never be a minor detail you overlooked. And with your profile set to private, you also deny more information since no-one is able to tell how much time you actually put into the game. So when trouble shooting in the future, provide as much information as possible to get the actual fix as quick as possible.
