I have no idea what i am doing...
i just got the game and have spent my fist four hours of it wandering arounding trying to figure out how to progress. iv been killed about 7 times by other players flown into a star once ande have ran out of air and gass because i didnt know how to dock, i have played the totarial now and can dock and shoot at a basic lvl but i still dont really know how to get money or find the things the quests ask me for like food.

so if some one could type out a little tutorial or send me to a decent link that would be much apreciated.

Hehe, don't worry, most of us started out like this.

First move: If you haven't, RTFM. Seriously. Don't skip anything, lots of very useful info in there. I went months without even knowing i could change the scanner range distance.

Second move: Don't worry. You have nothing to lose at this stage, so just enjoy yourself. Player blows you up? Pfft, laugh at them, send them messages like: Wow, you are so brave killing a new player, i wish i could be as brave as you are. :D Also, its a good time to learn the value of having insurance. Don't be one of those players who flies without insurance and loses everything due to greed.

Third move: Get out of the starting area to avoid the jerks who hang around killing newbies. Or switch to Solo or join the Mobius Group (PvE), at least until you can upgrade a little.

Fourth move: Do some missions, learn the game, practice a little combat, do a little trading. Try and find what suits you best. Once you get some decent upgrades, perhaps upgrade an Eagle a little, you can hit a Resource Extraction Site and take on wanted pirates flying small ships.

Fifth move: Go get 'em tiger!

It automatically appears once you die, its the post-death screen where you can select which modules you want to insure

I've never read the manual and saw a couple of "let's play" videos on YT, back in 2014 before the game came out.
Loved what I saw about the game, and it's my first ever SIM. I too was able to learn the game somewhat quickly, spent a few hours on the tutorial and learned quickly how to jump between systems, docking and undocking and also the missions given by the station.
Not once felt frustraded about the game, loved every single minute of it.

They call it "insurance", but it isn't quite like 21st century insurance: you don't have to pay anything up front. In essence, all of the ships are automatically "insured", but to claim the insurance, you need to pay 10% of the original purchase price. If "original purchase price" is zero (you blow up while still in your basic freebie ship) then the insurance bill is zero. If you've bought a Cr300,000 Cobra and added a Cr700,000 of extra accesories and modules to it, then your insurance bill if you blow it up is Cr100,000 (one-tenth of Cr1 million).

Cargo insurance either has not yet been implemented or has been removed in an earlier version. If you blow up carrying Cr500,000 worth of palladium, then that money is gone forever.

It's advised that, unless you want to lose all your progress, never launch without having enough cash in your account to pay for the insurance. It might seem like a waste having all that cash just sitting there not doing anything, especially if you've got empty cago spaces, but that money is your insurance.

Manual: http://hosting.zaonce.net/elite/website/assets/ELITE-DANGEROUS-GAME-MANUAL.pdf

And you can see your current rebuy cost on the right hand panel. Whenever you buy another ship, always make sure you can afford the rebuy costs at least once. There is nothing more frustrating than losing your freshly paid ship and starting out in a sidewinder again.

The very first money can be done with some simple delivery missions, those who give you the thing you need to transport. On your journey make sure to scan at least the starts for some extra money by selling the data later on. If you want to trade I would work towards the Hauler or Adder, if you want to hunt go for the Eagle and then Viper. If you want to try that with your Sidewinder I suggest getting 2x small gimbaled weapons (pulse lasers are simple, cheap and effective) unless you're already very good with fixed ones from the tutorials ... ;)

When you're able to kill some smaller pirates you might want to look for those kill X pirate missions as well, depending on your rank they can pay out a decent amount of money.

But it comes to the point where you have to decide what you want to do, the game will not tell you so you have to figure that out by yourself.
