It automatically appears once you die, its the post-death screen where you can select which modules you want to insure
Loved what I saw about the game, and it's my first ever SIM. I too was able to learn the game somewhat quickly, spent a few hours on the tutorial and learned quickly how to jump between systems, docking and undocking and also the missions given by the station.
Not once felt frustraded about the game, loved every single minute of it.
Cargo insurance either has not yet been implemented or has been removed in an earlier version. If you blow up carrying Cr500,000 worth of palladium, then that money is gone forever.
It's advised that, unless you want to lose all your progress, never launch without having enough cash in your account to pay for the insurance. It might seem like a waste having all that cash just sitting there not doing anything, especially if you've got empty cago spaces, but that money is your insurance.
And you can see your current rebuy cost on the right hand panel. Whenever you buy another ship, always make sure you can afford the rebuy costs at least once. There is nothing more frustrating than losing your freshly paid ship and starting out in a sidewinder again.
The very first money can be done with some simple delivery missions, those who give you the thing you need to transport. On your journey make sure to scan at least the starts for some extra money by selling the data later on. If you want to trade I would work towards the Hauler or Adder, if you want to hunt go for the Eagle and then Viper. If you want to try that with your Sidewinder I suggest getting 2x small gimbaled weapons (pulse lasers are simple, cheap and effective) unless you're already very good with fixed ones from the tutorials ... ;)
When you're able to kill some smaller pirates you might want to look for those kill X pirate missions as well, depending on your rank they can pay out a decent amount of money.
But it comes to the point where you have to decide what you want to do, the game will not tell you so you have to figure that out by yourself.
