How do I restore my custom key bindings backup?
Hi,

Just bought this game.

I have backed up my Custom.binds.tmp35769576 file to my desktop.

As usual the game forgets all custom settings when I restart it. At what point do I copy this file back to the ...AppData/Local/... folder so the game reads it and "remembers" what it saved?

Eager to actually start playing this game after two hours of futzing with control settings. :really:

Thank you.

not sure if this helps, but try to write protect your config file...

That Custom.binds.tmp35769576 should just be called Custom.binds

I don't know if you're aware of this, but you can rename it from Custom to anything you want, and give it a unique name so it's selectable in the controller presets menu.

For example my bindings are named "Muttley's X52 Config.binds", and in the file (which is just an XML file), I edited line 2 to read:

<Root PresetName="Muttley's X52 Config">

That way it will never be overwritten by mistake.

OK I'm going to add to this, and try not to complicate it too much. Once you setup a custom binds, and rename it in the second line, and then save it as that name with the extension .binds using what ever program you edit it with...Then once you have done that make a folder inside the binds folder, with the same name, and copy that file into it.
Now the problem I have is that I have too many controllers. When you do that it numbers them, and at any time when you remove a controller, you loose the binds as in it renames them and puts an error on the file.
So what I am doing is making a custom profile for each situation, and making a folder for it. That way, anytime I want, I can delete the files usable completely, and copy the file I want from the folder that has the setup I want to use. Example I have Thrust master Warthog Stick and throttle.. So I have a profile that is named "KEYWHONLY" for( Keyboard and warthog only) {{by the way what ever you name the profile it uses all caps anyway}} so may as well name it that way.
So now lets say I add another controller " 30 button Arduino special home made jobber" I make a new profile, and name it KEYWHARD that's for (keyboard Warthog and Arduino)
I make another folder and copy that into the new folder. If something goes wrong with the Arduino, or I take it off the computer, and forget that I did that, then I will suddenly loose the bindings again. So I can correct the problem, and proceed in two ways. Close ED and then simply delete the readable files, and copy the KEYWHONLY file into that place. Restart, and go on. Or shut down everything, and add the Arduino. Then I replace the messed up files with the saved KEYWHARD file. and I am good to go. OK, now then you noticed I left out the rudder pedals, well then do the same thing KEYWHRPARD or even, KEYWHRPARDBB , That is a Keyboard, Warthog, Rudder pedals, Arduino, and a 30 button box (BB) profile without the Leo Bodnar board, that all make up my custom space ship. That at anytime I can reduce or expand on. Make alternate profiles for mining, Battle, and what ever you want to do. I hope I didn't just mess with anybody's head and that I actually cleared something up to go with the fantastic answer that got me here in the first place after loosing my binding about twenty times. SO I want to thank Mu77ley for posting this,,,,, looks like 5 years ago.

I suppose it may be possible to have several profiles without the folders, But I like the security of a good usable file in a safe place.
Capntedy9, for your in depth fix. It would though be much simpler for Frontier to crack the problem that has plagued code jockeys at FD Towers for years, but lets face it we all know its a pipe dream its impossible. Nobody can write an easy to use reliable key binding program, it just can't be done.
