Steam Install &/or Elite:Dangerous Install

I bought E:D here via Steam yesterday and the game has been downloaded and installed on my Steam Games screen. I had a bit of a problem registering the key as many others have also had. I put up a support ticket at the E:D site and it was resolved. When it resolved I found that I also had an available download file in my E:D Shop account. I downloaded it to my hard drive but have not installed it yet. My query is, is it okay to install that download to my PC or will I have some sort of conflict between it and my Steam install?. Excuse my ignorance but I belong to an older generation who didn't grow up with PC's and have only ever played the Football Manager series before and am used to buying a ROM disc and installing that to my PC. Then when I play FM I can either start the game direct from my Steam account or from my PC install shortcut as long as I am signed into Steam either online or offline. Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for any help offered.

There's no point installing both, but either will work fine.

I purchased this game on Steam and installed through Steam but i am not launching it from steam anymore. I created shortcut myself and am launching dirrectly from launcher. Better performance.

you don't need the steam client to start this game.
open the game folder and start the "edlaunch" file
