Any Hotas below the T 1600 isn't very good.
VKB EU: https://flightsimcontrols.com/
Being the disgruntled owner of another Hori product (I've got one of their wheels, and it's utter
T16000M with the FCS throttle... Meh... "the best"? Not even close...
Cheap and cheerful, does the job... But...
Even less buttons, and they tend to break quite easily (the joystick gimbal wears out after about 6 months for me, the fire buttons last about the same time before I had to take them apart and reshape the spring in the microswitch, and I NEVER had the problem that most people have with them - the yaw axis apparently works loose and starts wobbling all over the place). You've heard of "buy cheap, buy twice"? I bought 4 of the sticks before they janked the prices up
The sticks on their own used to cost £25 a piece (the newer more expensive versions have textured plastic on the buttons and a bit of orange trim, but it's still the same cheap £25 stick underneath all that). Cheap entry level rubbish with an overinflated price tag (and this is coming from someone who used to swear by them). To be fair they were good sticks for £25 a pop, they're just not worth any more than £35 a pop - which is why I started hunting for the best upgrades I could find without spending stupid money a couple of years ago...
DON'T touch the Saitek sticks with a bargepole... When they work they're great, but they had a LOT of quality control issues (a friend of mine had to send his back half a dozen times before he got one that wasn't faulty in some way - I had warned him, so no sympathy lol).
Now Logitech have taken over I've read that's improved quite a bit, but I've not tried them myself.
These days I'm using a dual VKB Gladiator setup. Best mix of value/quality/features you're going to find... https://flightsimcontrols.com/product/gladiator-nxt/
I've got the premium version on the right, and the standard version on the left with an OTA adaptor so it can be used as a throttle or a joystick. I'm probably going to get the OTA adaptor for the right stick as well, it's more comfortable/ergonomic.
They also have a variety of official mods you can add, springs to adjust resistance, cams to adjust the feel and behaviour of the sticks (don't think that's actually on the Gladiators, but I know it's on some of the more expensive VKB), adjustable dry clutches to adjust the load, different style grips you can put on for WWII/Modern/futuristic style games, and adjustable hand rests (if you've got big hands like me, you'll need to remove them, which is just a case of pulling 2 screws out of the grip), then there's a bunch of different throttle quadrants, button boxes etc you can add to them...
Plus in the UK you shouldn't have to pay VAT on them because of some computer input device exemption priced below a certain amount, I can't remember the exact specifics - not sure if it will apply if you buy 2 sticks in 1 order (might go over the price limit and sting you with a VAT charge), but there's been no import charges/taxes/hidden fees in the 4 orders I've placed with them (2 separate stick orders, premium upgrade kit order for the right stick, and OTA adaptor order for the left). Of course then you've got to pay delivery charges however many times, but that's cheaper than VAT/import fees anyway. They reduce the price when you put in a UK address, knocking the VAT off the listed prices on the website
Plus in the UK you shouldn't have to pay VAT on them (computer input device exemption priced below a certain amount, can't remember the specifics (I think the limit was about £150?); not sure if it will apply if you buy 2 sticks in 1 order, but there's been no import charges/taxes/hidden fees in the 4 orders I've placed with them (2 separate standard stick orders, premium upgrade kit order for the right stick, and OTA adaptor order for the left).
There's also the value of the Pound vs the Euro to consider... I paid the same price in Euros for both sticks a couple of months apart: One was £120, one was £145... Paypal take an extra % in their own exchange rates... (still cheaper than VAT rate).
I dont have any Problems with my T16000M !
My is 1 /12 years old and it works great :)
Button issues are fixed with the Firmware Update ^^
VKB is better but also more expensive. In that price range virpilcontrols is another brand to have a look at.
Don't touch Saitek/Logitech stuff other than the x52.
Maybe you're more delicate than me, or you're not putting as much time in as I used to... I'd get about 500 hours use before I had to fix or replace them. I've owned 4 of them... And I can't recommend them after using VKB, unless you're skint and can get them at about half the current retail price...
And you can't fix a hardware issue with a firmware update. The springs in the micro switch for the trigger needed bending back into shape periodically. If I used them for more than 6 months I'd have to stretch the gimbal spring out and add spacers to stop it wobbling and causing stick drift... Or set console sized deadzones on the axes... Drove me crazy, always starting a slow drifting roll... So you'd increase the deadzone a bit more, after a few days you'd have to do it again, and again...
You won't get Virpil at VKB Gladiator prices (believe me, I looked, many times, in many places lol). It's basically VKBs "budget" stick. I almost wish I could justify spending those sort of prices on either Virpil or VKB
Sorry i didn´t mean Hardware broken thinks ^^
it will not last long, buttons will stop working and axis will become un-centerable after around 150 hours of use. this may seem like a lot, but it isnt. thats around 5 months for casual players.
save up for a bit, and buy a decent one. i use a warthog and i love it. ive burnt through so many of the cheap ones i cant even count. its in the dozens tho.
if you buy a cheap one to get in to the action instantly, you will be subscribing not purchasing. you will need to buy a new one in very short order, and that will prevent you saving enough for a good one.
its too bad the price differences are so drastic from the low end setups to the mid range, but believe me its worth it.
The X52s weak point was the central spring for the stick, the X52pro fixed that with 2 springs and a metal disk for smoother movement.
Also the black plastic/silber metal of the X52pro does look better than the blue plastic of the X52.
Both sticks have one weak point: the connector cable between stick and throttle.
It's a PS2 plug 2 plug cable, and it can get loose while playing. Using cable straps to fix the cable/plugs is a good idea.
I didn't have any trouble with the spring of my X52 (non pro). I did have trouble with the throttle though. I had to open it and remove some kind of resistance from the axis after a few months.
It's cheap like pretty much everything Saitek produced.
I don't believe that X52s are any worse than similar products. they all break if you use them long enough and never break if you leave them in a cupboard.
Dude... If you're using an official Virpil base with that... Just stick with what you've got and get a decent throttle unit. If you're using the Thrustmaster Warthog base, get a proper Virpil one... (Unless someone has come up with a fix for the Virpil levers just showing as switches on the TM base).
It's FAR superior to any of the utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ trashy pathetic garbage toys everyone has recommended from logitech/thrustmaster/saitek/hori etc, and even noticeably better than the Gladiators I'm using/recommending.
If I could justify spending £400 on a single stick it's what I'd have gone for... Dual constellations with WarBRD bases...
So what if you've got to replace the springs occasionally? As metal flexes, it weakens, until it eventually fails... I'll have to do it with my Gladiators eventually (luckily they're really easy to work on as they're made for end user building/customisation, and they even include spare springs in the box).
It does kind of make me think you started this thread just to troll though... Of course a HOTAS that costs less than just the grip you're currently using is going to be
TL /DR: You've already got pretty much the best of the best... When looking for something else, if it lists compatibility for any Playstation/Xbox/other console... It's rubbish, just a cheap toy that you'll probably hate... If you had bought the Hori garbage, you would probably have smashed it in frustration at how cruddy it was.
I started this thread because someone was asking about sticks for PS4. AFAIK there are only two, and Hori is one of them. As I said in the OP, the button layout looks quite good, but i later found out that some of the buttons are fake - for show only.
Wouldn't be the first time... Probably won't be the last
Similar problem with the wheel I got... Well the buttons work, but they're redundant. A button either side of the wheel, that do exactly the same as the pedals... In a position where you're going to be accidentally pressing it constantly...
Someone clearly didn't think that design through
