Navigating the galaxy map
I'm about 350 hours in now and I still cannot work the galaxy map. Pretty much all I can do in it reliably is typing the name of a system and plot a route to that.

Can anyone point me at any didactic material that explains how to use the map better?

Hey, I'm back here, because I genuinely did try to help you figure out what you didn't know. I often think about it, if we just don't get what you're trying to convey, so I'll ask you something and perhaps this is what confuses you and us in regards to the whole 3D to 2D.

Is the issue that when you are flying your ship, you can orient yourself to face various Nebulas, or stars in the distance and when you're using the Galaxy map you no longer have the ability to orient your character the same way?

Because then I understand where you are coming from and I guess what's problematic about that is that when you're using the Galaxy Map, there's no indicator what is where in relation to your ship.

Is that it?

That is my assumption, but if not I thought I'd give it a try.
Because I sometimes see something in the distance and then I want to check it out on the Galaxy map, but I don't know which way I am looking.

So this thread came to mind and perhaps that is what he was referring to.
In one of the older threads i read that selecting nearby stars from the nav menu can help you orient yourself.
Point the ship towards the star, or constellation you're interested in, then target nearby stars.
If one of them is near the star(s) you want to jump to, jump in that direction.
When you arrive, try to again point your ship in the direction you want to travel in, and again use the nav console or galaxy map to see if there is a nearby star you can jump to that takes you closer to your desired destination.

Unfortunately, that is the only way to reliably get there unless your destination is within 1 jump. :/
There is no way to target a star from the starfield (cockpit view), or plot a route to it.
Pity.

Yea it is.

And perhaps that is what OP was referring to, just didn't know how else to express himself and it ended up sounding like a troll?

I guess we'll never know, but I thought I'd return here in case he was being honest.

A thumbnail overview would be this.
There is a marker, or cursor that marks your current location when you open the map.
Using the left, right, up, down controls (usually A,D,W,S respectively) you can move the map to the left and right relative to the direction of the view. Up and down move the map forwards and backwards. The mouse (or Q and E keys) can be used to re-orient the view. This also re-orients the x and y axis that you move the map along, left and right, or up and down.

Because the map is huge, moving the marker itself would be annoying, so instead the marker stays in the center and the whole map moves. This is pretty easy to wrap your head around.

Holding the right mouse button while moving the mouse up and down moves the marker/map up and down along the z axis. Since the galaxy is a flat-ish disc, the vertical axis isn't used that often.

This helped a lot, thanks - particularly once I'd realised that "current location" means where I am looking on the map, rather than where my ship is. The marker still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, and I am still clunky AF trying to move around the map (and particularly trying to work out which stars are actually close by rather than just appearing to be close on the screen), but I've got a bit better.

Thanks again.

What does "camera" mean in this context, please?

The "camera" in this context is what determines your point of view. In general, I think everything in a 3D scene is represented via 3D coordinates, without regard to any particular point of view. Things of course look different depending on where you are and which direction you're looking. The metaphorical "camera" is what determines that, and therefore determines which perspective of that 3D world you see on your screen. It's the same as a real camera moving through a real movie set. Position and direction of the camera determines what your audience will see. It is analogous with software.

You could imagine navigating through a computer-generated 3D space as similar to controlling a remotely operated camera (especially when you can't see yourself on screen). You're just flying that metaphorical camera around.
And thanks again for this. Helped a lot.

It still seems weird to describe it as a camera, which makes me think I might be missing something, but I'm kinda there.

Thanks again (again)

Never had any problem with that in either logical or orrery view

Galmap focal point operates on a 2D plane; if you zoom out enough you can see neighbouring galaxies as well as the Magellanic Clouds featured on the launcher.

Interesting fact: you can also rotate the 2d system map

Not only that, but you can zoom in on planets and rotate them to find landable or other settlements/ports.
And, using controller/keyboard is sometimes preferable to using the mouse, because the LMB so often tries to move/rotate the map, when all i want is to select plantes/bodies.

Elite Dangerous is like Factorio, RimWorld, or Barotrauma in that even after hundreds of hours you'll still be learning new things.
I wouldn't normally think of comparing a 3D space sim with 2D builders or whatever the heck Barotrauma is (awesome is what it is), but there is so much content in ED, and so much fine control over everything that it's impossible to learn it at once.
